Hi,
Do creating sub domains still have a place in seo? I am creating a blog and was going to have various sub domains with blogs and link going back to main site. Is it still worth doing this?
Thanks
Jules

Subdomains don't help SEO. They need SEO like anything else.

A link is a link, so long as google indexes it.

Is it worth it? Well, it's worth as much as the page is that
    has the link.

Google treats a subdomain as a different domain actually. I have seen it be a benefit to SEO by creating a blog on a subdomain. By utilizing the subdomain you can actually host the domains on separate hosts making the IP addresses different.

I have also seen it done with a landing page.

To further explain the SEO benefit of a subdomain, you can pad it with a keyword so any link that is made from your website utilizes that word. i.e. subdomain.website(dot)com would benefit you because many sites that create a link for you will not show the folder but will show the subdomain in the link.

However, this does affect some parts of SEO that are tough to support with evidence. Since Google sees the subdomain as a different site it does not benefit from links created to the main domain and vice versa. Although benefit is passed through the links.

One way I could support this I guess and its a bit flimsy but if I were to create a website on a domain and 6 months later create a page on that website, it would get benefit from my 6 months work. However if I were to create a subdomain after that 6 months the subdomain does not seem to reap much benefit from the domain. IMO this is because Google sees it as a new website with no credibility.
