For SEO purposes would it be better to make several different wordpress.com blogs under different fictitious names or would it be OK to have one wp.com account and make several blogs around the same subject pointing to your money site?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have a few accounts under different names, and only a few occasional posts to my own sites, mixed in with links to other non-competing relevant posts. I also use a theme that doesn't underline the links ("contempt" is one)and I color the links using html to match the text color so the links aren't obvious (wordpress.com will ban your account for spam blogs)

If there is 500+ words of 100% unique content and only 1-2 links would it be an issue?

He's talking about a wordpress.com blog. Unique, non-spammy posts should be okay. I don't put links in all posts, maybe every few. I did lose my blogs in the past from thinking I had to get the most "value" from every post.

If you are going to put any sort of long-term effort into these blogs you should definitely just get your own domain.

Last thing you want is years of hard work to be wiped out because wordpress decides for whatever reason to shut you down.
