Yes, definitely use alt text. It really is important for SEO (on-page). For example, if you're keyword is blue widget, name the image bluewidget.jpg and use "blue widget" as alt text.

      The post is pure spam.

People overused the alt tag, so it's been
downgraded. Back in 1997, it was for
people who had bad eyesight. That's really
what it was for. Giving a good text alternative
      to an image.

Google tells you to name an image as to what it is.
But people stuff it with keywords. Fail. There is
no real reason to use the alt tag anymore, except maybe
on a header image that links back to the main page.

Every image should have alt text as to what it is. If it's
the menu button, the alt should be "menu." It should not
be a another way of getting a keyword in. That's why
people get their pages junked. Using alt tags for stupid
reasons. Google is not as dumb as people think.

In 2012, there is no need to use one of the first
html tags. It should go the way of blink. Unless, it is
used properly. Thing is, "properly" is really another term
      for old fashioned.

What people really should use is title tags. But some are
stuck in 1997. Scratch that. 2012 should be going towards
      html5 and elements.
