Do URL's w/o <A> tags count?

Does Google count a URL w/o an <a> tag as a link?

I suspect they do, but I don't have conclusive evidence.

I base my suspicion on a few things I've observed, such as BMR rejecting that text if the post also has an <A> link, and also on the observed effectiveness of certain high PR posts where links are not allowed but a URL in the text is.

What do you all know about this?

Do getting these text urls w/o an <A> link serve any purpose? Do they increase your backlink diversity?

No, if a URL isn't enclosed between the a href tags then it isn't a link. I've seen no evidence that a published URL that isn't clickable is beneficial.. apart from maybe some copy and paste traffic depending on the nature of it, and it's placement.

It will be considered as Text in Search Engine Crawler, because these crawler looks inside <a> for links.

Has anyone done an actual test of that?

Because, for example, videos are getting uploaded to high pr video sites like this one en masse, and anecdotally, they seem to have a positive effect. And as you can see, there is no link there.

So I want to know, categorically, whether I would be wasting my time and money have videos uploaded to those sites... or whether they work, even without an A link.

Like I said, anecdotally... they seem to be working.

But that would mean that Google IS interpreting the TEXT as a link, or at least as some kind of a proxy for a link.

Now I don't think that's such a stretch. After all, ANY url could be deemed a "reference to a source" that was meant to be followed in some context.

I'm just trying to figure out, conclusively, whether those posts are useful, or whether they are a complete waste of time.
