Live test of seo for a new site

Hi all

I have been following this forum for some time and thought it was about time I made my first post about my seo projects.

I currently own several websites and of course they have required seo over the years. I am based in the UK and was not prepared to pay fortunes to so called professionals in this country without understanding the concepts and ideas behind the seo projects. As well as owning these sites I also run a small internet marketing department for a professional business in the UK, and so over the last few years have come to know a lot about the methods involved in search engine marketing and optimisation.

Having trawled forums on the subject for years and then putting what I believe to be the best practices in to action, I believe I have come across several great techniques that have proven results. What should be noted however is that what I do is not unique, is not rocket science, just hard work, time and patience, and whenever I come across a new or improved technique then I am more than happy to try these out!

So what I thought I would do here is use a mixture of a couple of techniques that I have recently come across (one of them being Nick Watsons that seems to have been based on Cash 202's from a different forum), and do a live case study on a site I am just setting up this week. This will help me track the daily/weekly motions of this new site and give valuable feedback to me on the viability of these techniques. Also this may help others out there, just like I have been helped over the past few years by reading threads like this!!

The site that I will concentrate on is targeting a keyword that has 5,400 exact monthly local searches and "high" competition. I have purchased a domain name that has 3 words, 2 of which are an exact match to my targeted keyword (the keyword itself not being available). It is a .co.uk domain.

The site itself will be w3c compliant, have a home page with about 750 words of relevant content, a contact page, a further couple of pages with very little content and a sitemap.

By all means any comments or questions are welcome and I will report back when the site is up!

Regards

MF

    Thanks for the replies guys

So the new site is live and was submitted to google webmaster tools yesterday - however as of this morning it is not indexed yet so hopefully this will happen in the next few days.

So whilst I am waiting for it to be indexed I am going to start creating the content that I will use in my seo efforts(the site has its own unique content on it - about 750 words - but I need unique content for submission to article sites etc). To start off with I am going to need a unique high quality article of about 750-1000 words - this will be on the subject of my site. I will then manually attach spin tags to it to ensure I can make several high quality spun copies. In addition I am going to order 10 unique articles (each will be 500 words) on the general subject of my website - not specifically about my keywords but more just on the general subject. I can get these for $3 each and again they will come with spin tags.

So I will repost in a couple of days when I have the content ready.

If anybody has any comments or questions then please feel free.

Ok so a quick update on progress so far.

The site is now indexed but I am outside of the top 15 pages for my keyword (I do manual checks as I find these are more accurate than using software).

So I like the idea of incorporating videos in to my seo campaign and therefore I have had a short video made promoting my site and uploaded it to youtube. Over yesterday and today i have manually created blogs/pages on the following sites and in each one inserted a unique (unspun) article loosely related to my keywords, and inserted in each a link to my site, a link to my video and a picture or 2:

Squidoo, Weebly, Wikia, Wikispaces, Slideshare, posterous, Skyrock, Zimbio, Blogger and Wordpress.

I have also set up today to have high quality spun articles used to set up pages/blogs at approx another 25 web 2.0 sites. In addition I have set up for my high quality spun articles to be submitted to a lot of article sites, which will hopefully give me a load of links!

So I will now wait until I get the list of links from the 2 projects I have set up above (web2.0 and articles)

    Take care all

Just quick suggestion, Try indexkings.com if you want to get indexed pretty fast.
It's a Free tool, and can be useful. Also got quick question regarding your site,
Which monetisation model are you gonna use for your site?

    Best luck with your journey,

Be aware link diversity/ IP diversity is the key these days so work towards it.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I try to use different services for different parts of the seo, therefore Ip addresses are varied. With regard to link diversity, this will hopefully become apparent as i progress!

With regard to monetisation, the site actually provides a quoting service which has real live companies giving the quotes, so there is nothing like adsense or anything on the site - just a quality site leading people to genuine companies providing the services. I find it interesting to find markets where you can actually make contacts and set up systems with actual companies and firms who will pay for the leads/work, rather than relying on adsense to be the middle man and take a large cut of the profits!

    Will keep you posted

    So just a quick update.

my web 2.0 sites are up and running and are being pinged at a rate of 5 a day. I have also created a link "pyramid" with high pr pages and good quality content.

I am just waiting for the approval of some 250 articles and then I will have completed my initial run of content. Once I have all the urls for the articles I will create RSS feeds for all of my links, and all drip feed all of my links also.

I will then have to give it a few days to see how this goes and then decide what action to take from there!

So I now have the urls of nearly 200 articles and also the urls for my high pr link "pryamid". So that is all my content submitted and now just need them all indexing and to start to see some rankings (I am seeing some rankings for lesser keywords in my webmaster tools already but strangely these seem to be for the inner pages of the site). The main page is not ranking as yet in the top 15 pages for the main keyword.

So I am going to drip feed ALL of my urls over the next few days and also create RSS feeds for them all.

I am trying to avoid using scrapebox type blasts and am trying to do this as "whitehat" as is practical. So we will have to see what the serps look like in the next few days or so!!

    Take care

    Hi all

Not in the top 15 pages as yet but there has been a slight delay with my rss submissions and drip feed of links so hopefully once these start getting indexed then I will see some improvements.

To help the ball keep rolling I am doing 200 social bookmarks and then pinging these links over a period of about 6 or 7 days.

I am starting another thread as well as I use these same techniques on an existing site (page rank 1, 3 years old) to see if the process is faster on a well aged site.

So that is a great start for a brand new site in a high competition market.

So i will give it a few days now for the google dance and see where we settle. i will then decide the course of action to get to page 1!!

FYI, the high competition bit you mention is to do with the ads Google shows, and not the competition for the keywords.

        Hi there

Thanks for the message - the reason I consider and therefore mention the high competition bit is I have always taken in to account the competition levels in adwords as a potential indicator of an attractive keyword/phrase to target. I then of course do a lot more research to decide what keywords I am going to target, but a good starting point is whether a lot of people wish to pay to advertise in that niche! if they do then there may well be some money to be made!! Whether that be from targeting the advertisers themselves to advertise on my site, or using an adsense type system, or as in the case of this case study, selling leads to businesses in that sector!

Anyway, all good and thanks for the comments! As of today we are still number 22.

Thanks MF1977 for conducting this case study, it's really helpful to all of us

I have some questions regarding your process. Hope you don't mind explaining them to us all.

    1) How many articles you've used so far to rank this particular keyword? And how you distributed them (to your main site, to Web 2.0 properties, to article directories, etc)?

    2) Can you explain in more details your link building process? What is your preferred link velocity (i.e: how fast did you build them)? I want to ask this as many people suggest it's not a good idea to build too many links at once to a new site.

    3) What about your anchor texts? What is the percentage of your exact match anchor texts? You know, Google is going frenzy these days targeting over-optimized sites and I believe that too many exact match anchor text links is a detrimental factor.

    4) You said that you gathered your URLs and drip-fed them. Can I ask where did you drip-feed them to? And are pinging, creating RSS feeds then submitting them to RSS directories enough to increase indexing rate?

    5) I see you submitted your spun articles to a lot of article directories. Do you use any special software like AMR or service like UAW to do that? If not, can you share the list with us

Again, thanks a lot for sharing your live case study MF1977, you're awesome!

      Hi there

Your questions are welcome - i will try to answer them as best I can using your numbering:

      1. In total I used 12 unique articles. these 12 were used to create 12 unique web 2.0 properties on the highly rated sites.
      2. All the links were built over a period of about 2 weeks - basically it was just the time it took to get them built without rushing around!!
      3. Funnily enough, most anchor texts were for my keyword! I threw in some different keywords to different sites to add a bit of a mix and I don't think there is any harm in the web 2.0's and articles having 2 links in - 1 to your site and one to another site (I was just putting in a link to other sites that i own!!).
      4. I use a desktop pinger that allows you to upload your urls and ping them for free - it pings them to 80+ services. I ping about 40-60 links a day and like to do this manually to maintain the drip feed. And it would seem that this is enough as they must have been indexed to get me to page one!!
      5. I take one of the best 12 articles and add spintax to between 65-100% uniqueness at the word/phrase level. This article itself then becomes worth its weight in gold!! I then use AMR to submit it.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions then let me know

      Regards

Congrats on your ranking. But be careful how you diversify your anchor texts, based on experience, your website will not last in the rankings. I'm not sure how long will it take to drop but it will drop.

Thanks - and i am wary as well!! This was a new site and I was keen to test the way these methods helped with moving it up the rankings. I agree that we must be careful with anchor text and diversity, and will be looking to increase the diversity of links pointing to the site now that the site has hit page one.

            Following your thread, MF1977.

            1) I wouldn't worry too much about anchor texts as your site is still in a starting phase, and in my experience the anchor text variation comes into play a bit later.

            2) Very brave of you to spin the article and mass submit it to article directories, as this is actually something that Google doesn't really like. I just hope the algorithm doesn't mature enough to detect spun content.

Anyway, good luck and keep it up!

P.S: Any sign of Google dance yet?

              Hi

the quality of each spun article is exceptionally high - it is actually better than a lot of manually written articles!

google dance - yes I have been having some of that!! for example I am position 11 today, position 9 two days ago! So yes have been bouncing a bit but hope to settle down soon.

Thanks MF1977 for your reply I really appreciate that!

One thing I want to know is about your "link pyramid." Can you further explain it to me? Is it something like building tier 1 links with big Web 2.0 and article directories (like the ones you mentioned) then strengthening them with more links? If that was the strategy, which types of links you would use to "buffer" your tier 1 links? Do you use any special tools to do the task?

    Thanks!

      Hi there

the link pyramid is just like you say - generally web 2.0 properties on tier 1 with tier 2 links feeding in to tier 1, and tier 3 links feeding to tier 2. I generally use social bookmarks and forum profiles for the tier 2 and 3 links, and also have as many of the links built manually as is possible.

      Hi there

The links directly to the money site consist of web 2.0's, article submission, social bookmarks and a bit of forum profiles sometimes.

As I said at the outset, this was a test of whether this technique could work, and so far the answer is yes!

Thanks so much for sharing this case study.

For the drip fed links, you're pinging 40-60 links per day. These are the links from AMR? You'd get thousands of links from that?

Do you drip feed the rss feeds too, where you submit an rss packet of 40-60 links daily?

This is an awesome blueprint, I'm going to prepare a template from this thread.

Do you outsource the web 2.0 site article installations?

    Thanks again.

      Hi Owen

Actually from the AMR you get about 300 live instant links - so i just put these in to my pinging rota. I don't worry about any more article links I may get approved over the following weeks etc. I add all of my created links to my pinging rota.

Yeah you can just add your rss feeds in to the pinging rota also.

With regard to the web 2.0 properties, i manually create about 12 of them so that they are AWESOME quality with pictures and videos (that i have created and are unique to me) and then I also have some further 2.0 properties made for me by my trusted workers.

All in all this has provided great results. Having completed round 2 on this site a little while ago I am just pinging away and firmly positioned on page 1 - what is great is that for this keyword I also have another site that ranks on page one and therefore I have 2 sites in the top 10 - I may even go for a third!!

Let me know if I can help

      Cheers

      MF

That's what we've been doing using some tools that can do that. We have our money site and we have tier1 that points to money site and have tier2 and tier3 that points to tier1 sites.

What is the desktop pinging software did you use? Also, did you use any other software to build you backlinks, such as any fiverr gigs or other services?

Thanks again for taking the time to let us know how you got the site ranked.

      Hi there

I use a mass pinger that i purchased - no brand name though!

I outsource some of the work to trusted people - it has taken time to build up good and relatively inexpensive people to outsource to but I am lucky and there now!!

So I thought I would do a quick update on this thread - having done a couple more cycles, the site now sits at position 3 for its main keyword, and some high ranking positions for related keywords. These results have been static for quite some time and the site is nicely established on page 1.

I am now using this method for a few other sites for both myself and colleagues and looking forward to similar results!

Hope this helps anyone out there!!

    Regards

    MF
