It would depend on what you were using the keywords for and how much experience you have with SEO. When choosing keywords for Amazon sites I tend to go with phrases that get 3000+ exact searches per month.

No one can give you an answer as there are too many factors involved.

It's a little like asking what is the minimum speed I should drive my car on the road.

For starters, you don't need to just choose one. Yes, most people when creating a niche style website will choose a main keyword that has the least competition as possible but with the largest volume of traffic possible.

Now, I am going to give you a hand and give you an example of how to properly choose good keywords when doing an adsense site.

First off, look at the goal you want to accomplish when it comes to income for any given site. Let us say that you want to get $300/month income from a site.

You will then need to look at what the average CPC that you are going to be paid for your keywords.

For sake of argument that the CPC is $2, that means you will get paid $1.36/click. Now this is approximately of course because some might have a lower bid, some might have higher. But the closest you can get to "guessing" is looking at the contexual targeting tool in the admin panel of adwords.

So now you have a group of keywords that pay out at $1.36/click. That means you are going to need about 221 clicks to get your $300/month income from that site. 221 X 1.36 = $300.56

Lets say you have a group of 20 keywords that you are going to be targeting. Now, to get your 221 clicks you need to be able to bring in 2210 - 4420 visitors/month.

    This is based on a 5% - 10% CTR for your ads. 10% of 2210 = 221; 5% of 4420 = 221

So out of those group of keywords you will need them to have about 5525 - 11050 searches in total.

Now this is calculated that your keywords are on the first spot of google. And that that spot gets about 40% of the traffic. 2201 is 40% of 5525 and 4420 is 40% of 11050.

Now, this is all based on the AVERAGE you will get paid for each click; how much traffic you can expect from your keywords and the CTR of your website.

This is purely to be used as an example. You might make much less, or much more, there are to many uncertain factors involved to make a definite calculation.

But those are some of the factors that I use in determining how many exact match local searches that a keyword has before I will go after it.

We set our bottom limit at 1000 Exact match, but our current average is above 5000 right now. CPC of course is always kept above $1.

based on my experience, targeting lower than 5000 is not worth it, even more so when your keyword doesn't have a targeted ad then your effort to optimize your site will be worthless. so before you build your web based on your keyword, make sure you've already checked the ad that will come up based on your keyword on
