Dear site owner or webmaster of http://www...........

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

    use the search box and you'll find plenty of advice. It means you spammed and your site is toast unless you can remove the links.

      Horrible advice, don't listen to this guy. The BHW thread is more likely to work. Removing links could be the death of your site, even more so than the penalty itself.

    What better do you want than that? You listened to the wrong person when you took SEO advice. If you can, you need to start removing whatever kind of garbage links you have been building or you paid someone to build. If not, your rankings are not going to come back anytime soon.

    Big G doesn't like a bunch of links that look the same. If you can make your link profile more diverse and natural you can be reinstated, but that can be a long and difficult process. Removing unnatural links helps, and also getting new links in new, more natural, ways.

    Many people just abandon the site and start over with a fresh one, though.

      Unless you can remove all of the links, which in most cases is very difficult your site is finished. Move on and start again with a more robust strategy.

          Any changes in website traffic. Check for traffic loss across different location. Google penalty normally doesn't reflect at once. But given the fact you've got a message from them, your site is in danger zone now and can be in trouble anytime soon.

          Analyze the website links and figure out the links, keywords stuffing or any techniques that can be alarming to google.

    This notice just means that your site is experiencing a penalty, and that penalty can be large or small. if it wasn't for that penalty your site would be indexed higher. If you're happy with your position then treat the message as a warning that you are on the border line of a stiffer penalty. Try to do more natural link building and you will see a gain for your site when that penalty goes away.

    Give it 3-6 months. Allow the spammy links to fall off the edge of the internet, and your SERPS will jump. I'm in the same boat over here, I like my rankings even after penalty, and have started a MUCH more whitehat approach to getting my links out there, mainly focusing on PR (press releases), great linkable content, and hard work.

      Best advice in this thread. Good stuff - this is exactly what I'm doing.

      To the OP: your site will tank across all keywords/pages (except some very low traffic ones) over the next 1-3 weeks.

    Does this penalty only occur if someone pays for backlinks or does it also occur if you have too many of the same type of links?

    It just seems really odd that if someone has a relatively new website without a diverse backlinking profile, a competitor could give them a penalty by building some poor quality links.

    Hey OP,
    I think you've been given some good piece of advice here:
    1) Start acquiring 100% natural links and perhaps with time the site may come back in serps
    2) In parallel with 1), create a new site and start promotiong it by developing natural and highly diverse link building profile.

    Good luck!

    From what I have been searching on, the ranking drop will take effect from approximately 2 weeks from the message. There is a forum thread at BHW that states on how to fix the issue when you receive the message from Extrawinner.

      <--- This guy right here.

      I've received this message on 2 clients already (and yes they did drop), but everyone else has been safe.

      Idc really, I'll evolve with SEO as always, be one of the first to crack the new code and make a ton of cash. You should do the same.

      At this point I'm reading about this update at least 10+ times per day. If you have the ability to sort between newbie misinformation and real stuff, then you'll win in the end.

      Just don't listen to newbies... It's a guaranteed fail.

        No doubt. Joe, did your clients have Adsense or affiliate codes on their websites? Also, they dropped for certain phrases or all phrases?

        It seems some people have been completely de-indexed with this.
        {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5859255].message }}

          I find it highly unlikely for Google to de-index anyone unless their content is extremely ****ty... And they deserve it anyways.

          I think anyone that has analyzed the ole' Google quality control doc knows enough to prevent this severe of a penalty.

          Plus, what is Google going to do, de-index one of my client's that is a real local business? Na I just don't see them taking that route, as it would turn into all out war.

          As for your question, the 2 sites that were hit did have GWT and GA installed. These are REAL businesses mind you, not affiliate sites, so no adsense of aff links etc.

          I think one of them got spam blasted... I look at Majestic SEO and see 1,000 backlinks all from the same KW in 1 day. My team didn't create these links, so I can only imagine a competitor was testing this new* algo out!

          Pisses me off but I know Google cannot keep things this way. If you can successfully nuke competitors... Google will become the ****test search engine on the web.

          Client 1 (the one that got spammed): Dropped Completely out of the rankings for 2 main keywords.. I even searched to rank 400 and could not find them. The client however did keep a few rankings, in particular local Maps results seem to be fully in-tact. Also rank #10-11 on 2 other national secondaries.

          Client 2: This client received the message on the same day I completely re-vamped his content, which was sorta sketchy... But all his rankings have gone from ~#3.. Down to ~#13-20.

          To be honest, I'll take a -15 penalty any day because I know you can come back from that... But my national client that is completely gone... That freaks me out!

        Hey man,

        Thanks for the advice, I was thinking about removing the links and submitting a reconsideration to Google....should I do this?

        The thing is I already asked from BMR to remove all my links....now I have 2 sites that got this notification.....thinking about keep building links manually but should I contact Google or not? How will the pages be restored on the SERPS again?

        Thank you,

    Hi Joe, Based on your experience, Do you think those who received this message will receive a -50 penalties or worse? How long do you think this will last?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5859521].message }}
    • Profile picture of the author joetheseo
      Well if you stop building links... Indefinitely? I dunno. But the point is that if you have a penalty... Don't just keep throwing Blog network links at it and expect to move.

      Improve your quality signals, bookmarks, anchor text variation, unoptimized anchor texts (full url, etc). Build deep links, change META a bit, change content a bit to include more semantics / quality signals.

      Google can't seriously expect people to remove thousands of links that they potentially didn't even build.

      If Google keeps the algo as they currently have it, I promise you there will be Negative SEO services in no time flat.

      I would imagine there are SEO's already building ALN style links to legitimate domains to trick the Googbot into thinking the links are okay... But who knows.

      All I know is that if Google keeps this Unnatural link thing active, they will lose a lot of users, because all the top results will be nuked.

      Ya I think Google forgot a basic equation.

      Google = Search engine

      Facebook = Social network

      Google's attempt to combine the 2 makes me sick. Google+ sucks and like 70% of the users are fake anyways.

      I read this article where Google is losing employees because everything is based around "Google+" instead of advancing technology now.

      They have the right idea, at the completely wrong time. No one is going to leave Facebook anytime soon, their whole lives are stored there.

          well it looks like it might be you and not many others hehe. IMO what Zuckerberg had to say ab G+ was the truth. "It's a cool idea, but people have their whole lives on Facebook, I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon." something to that extent.

          I use google every day and have never even added a pic to G+. not to mention FB isn't going to let them import data, which makes it extremely hard for some/most people to move.

          Facebook timeline is actually a great ploy against G+ because it makes people remember their whole lives are on FB .

          We'll see how it plays out, but I can tell you none of my tech savvy buddies regularly visit their G+ pages, if that says anything.

    Just checked off over 100 of our accounts and proud to say zero notifications as mentioned. Any more info on the specific cause, was it paid links, or was it spammy links that have been flagged up? If it was me, I would use web master tools to get a full list of all links that web master has detected and go through these. I can only assume the cause is going to be fairly obvious. We have a lot of experience in bring sites back from penalty's if anybody wants us to take a look at their link list to identify the case you can PM me.

    I have a site that mostly used BMR in the middle of last year. I received a -50 penalty in November (I hammered the anchors and think that is what caused it) and have not touched it since. I got no letter in GWT last year.

    The site has never recovered but today I get a GWT for unnatural links. I can only assume G are going through all the BMR sites and adding penalties to any sites with links off those pages.

    I think all our sites that used BMR could be in trouble over the next couple of weeks.

    And I have proved that a site can get more than one penalty at a time!
