My question is in regards to different types of backlinks. What are they and what are the benefits/downsides to each?

This isn't a nofollow/dofollow discussion. There are plenty of posts on nofollow already and a lot of quality information. My question is geared more towards the categories of backlinks such as:

Social Bookmarks

Blogs

Web 2.0s

Contextual

Social Media

Forum Profiles

Videos

Beyond what each is good for and what the downsides of each is, I'd like to know exactly WHAT each is. Forum profiles and videos are self-explanatory, but the rest are terms that I've seen thrown around without having a solid grasp as to what they are.

Social Bookmarks (think of digg,reddit,delicious)

Blogs (could mean network, guest posting on blogs, blog roll links)

Web 2.0s (usually a free wordpress, blogger, etc that you build up and link to your main site)

Contextual (Inside of a post i.e. Today I went to the store and bought LINK HERE. It was so tasty nom nom nom)

Social Media (facebook likes, twitter retweets, google+) check addthis. It could also be your main twitter page, facebook, youtube (where the links are)

I overall agree with ya goosefrabah the only two differences I would make in the terminology is first that Web 2.0 is all the areas mentioned in the post:

Social Bookmarks
Blogs
Contextual
Social Media
Forum Profiles
Videos

And second I would include what was put into the Blogs area and then include the following:

Blogs (usually a free wordpress blog, blogger blog, squidoo lens plus could also mean network, guest posting on blogs, blog roll links)

That is my understanding

Dofollow or nofollow doesn't matter at all in the Post Panda Era. How good is a dofollow site if it is not bringing traffic in?

Hopefully the SEO sticky will get updated with this information soon. It seems like something super basic, but as a newbie it is hard to find a source of info that explains it clearly and all in one place.

Any place where you can put your site's identity is a link. i don't classify them these ways. for me every kind of links are important. from profile links to Social bookmarking.

If you want to backlink for your site i think you should emphasize on solid seo with rich & unique content otherwise you have chance to hit by google's penguin updates!

I never really believed it until I tried it but Twitter is an amazing source of SEO value. I ordered a package from Retweet Me | Harness the SEO value of Twitter and saw SERP boosts across multiple KWs.

IMO, all are good with different weight value. Why? Links are made to help boost a site's rankings unless they are from spammed resources. So the benefits that you can get from those links usually are good ranking and traffic (if done well).

social bookmarks: link from websites offering free bookmarking service to users. ex: digg, reddit, stumbleupon, etc.

web 2.0s: can't explain exactly what they are but the best example of most popular web 2.0s properties is squidoo, hubpages, wordpress, blogger, livejournal, weebly, tumblr.

contextual: link within a website content. could be from another blog, or article directories, or wiki

blogs: link you get from other blogs, could be in blogroll or the contextual link i explained above

social media: think of facebook, twitter, google plus, identica, etc.

all of them are good so long as you don't build them too aggressively.

If you have your hyperlink sandwiched inside context , its called contextual links. WEB 2.0 , wiki links etc are sources for contextual links. These days, search engine give more importance to these kind of links. If you can get relevant contextual links , its much better.

Guest post on high authority Blogs and Websites in your niche. Check the Blogs and Websites are highly ranked with Alexa.com - getting loads of activity which Google loves.

When your Guest Post is published on those sites then make them even more authorative by submitting the them to bookmark sites.
