Australian Based Local Business Need Help

I am creating a local business based site for my fathers plumbing business, and I was wondering whether it helps to host the site on an Australian server, or just on any server, perhaps hostgator etc?

If so what are some places that I could get cheap Australian hosting if at all possible.

Thanks guys

It would be best if you got Australian based web hosting and a .com.au domain as well if you want to make sure you are ranking locally. On top of this, you'll want to do the majority of your link building from .com.au sites and also use Google webmaster tools to tell Google that you only want to pull up on Google.com.au instead of just Google.com.

This should help you get off to a good start.

get a .com.au and if you have AU server hosting then go that way

I have heaps of .com.au TLD's hosted on USA servers and they rank find
      in google.com.au

I was also thinking I should perhaps get a .com domain as well and redirect it to the .com.au just incase people type in the site thinking that it's the standard.com any thoughts?

I wouldn't sweat the .com too much, I've rarely seen any good come from a single site with lots of domain names redirecting to it.

I'm not goin to use .com for any seo purposes just to simply capture any traffic that accidentally types in .com instead of .com.au

    @todawg_not

I have a hostgator account at the moment where I host most of my domains, would that be okay? I have no idea where it's based.

But I guess if I have a .com.au , australian hosted , and mainly links from as many Australian hosted sites, plus correct anchor texts etc I can't go wrong.

I have .com.au domains on both hostmonster and hostgater and has effected to ability to rank on page 1.

I don't think having hosting on AU servers is going to increase rankings, servers use some form mirror and cloud anyway to be more redundant

I guess the only way to know for sure, is to try it myself, because there seems to be so many different opinions on whether the hosting can effect the local rankings, because I have spoken to some people that say it does not matter, and others that have sweared by changing from either US Hosting to AU Hosting or vice versa, they've noticed completley different results.

I am in Melbourne but I get clients from all around the world. Personally I don't think the .com or .com.au really matters but I DO agree that having both point to your site is a good idea so you don't miss people who try one or the other version.

Thanks for that Laurence, it makes sense I guess because I know from experience that I've typed in sites before expecting a .com but coming to a completley different page, and the redirect would stop this from happening, and hopefully capturing potential traffic I may have lost previously.

Yes, hosting website on Australian server will help you in ranking in Australia...
But its not the only factor.

Other factors that may help you in ranking for Australian users,
On page techniques for Geo targeting
    - Use country specific language for non-English countries
    - Placement of anchor text from pointing to country specific websites
    - Mention your tangible address if possible

    Off page techniques
    - Set your preferred location in google webmaster tool
    - Get backlinks from target country
    - Submit your site on local search engines
    - Get listed on local classified websites
    - Get listed on Google maps, Yahoo! search marketing, Bing local listing

I don't think having your site hosted on a server in australia has any real effect on your local rankings. If you have a .com.au tld Google automatically knows you are based in Australia therefore you can save yourself some money by hosting offshore. I have a couple of .ie websites hosted on hostgator and they rank fine in Ireland. A geositemap Sitemap Generator and geo mark-up in schema format will ensure Google trusts your business location and includes you in local search queries (it also helps your site get merged with your Places page)

I agree with yourself and Laurence that you should have the .com redirecting to your .com.au also though if it's not too costly but host wherever's best value for money and get your backlinks locally!! I know some people might disagree with me on this one and to be honest they might be correct but I haven't seen much proof of this in my own experience so it's only my 2c!

      Good luck either way!!

Get your site hosted in Aus to be on the safe side and also faster load times for Australian visitors. I had a .com hosted on an Aus server and it ranked really well in Australia but terrible for US until I moved it to a US server.

Going by that logic, I think it's safe to say it would be smart to host it on an Australian server. What Australian hosting company were you with.

Australian servers have a lower latency. that is, the time to connect to the server or how many hops. If you are uploading lots of content or regular content this can save you a lot of frustration.

I can host your site. Use alwaysdiscount for a 20% recurring discount. You will need to go for Unlimited Pro for Australian based hosting. Australian Web Hosting, Australian Domain Names | Media Fortress

.com is fine as long as you are able to do a good SEO job...
(tested on number of domains for different countries and .com works fine in any country but SEO really matters )
    Server?
Not sure that you would need AU host, find something reliable and it will do job anytime (tested and works regardless of the country)

Any site could be well positioned if you know what you are doing from anywhere

Harvez....still unable to send PMs (less than 50 posts) but jere's my reply anyway....God knows someone else might even be interested eh!

A Google Geo Sitemaps is basically an extension of the Sitemap protocol that lets you publish geo content to Google, in order to make it searchable in Google Earth and on Google Maps. With Geo Sitemaps, you can tell Googlebot about your geo content, rather than waiting for Google to figure it out for themselves.

The geo mark-up I was talking about is a form of microformats that can be included in your site's code and Google picks up your business name and full address from the microformats. There are other neat things you can do with microformats like adding authorship (the little profile pics you sometimes see in search results) and marking up reviews or testimonials (these are also visible in search results).

Neither will actually help your site's ranking (i don't think) but they will help Google to associate your site with it's physical address and hence make it more prominent in local search results.

IMO get involved with microformats......there's a great tutorial at Home - schema.org and there's a couple of good wordrpress plugins which save a lot of hassle.... "author hReview" and "geo mark".

        Good luck......

I'll have a look at the hosting straight away, the only one I've currently found that I've liked so far is ausweb, they have all the features that something like Hostgator would.

EDIT: Just had a look it seems to be cheaper than Ausweb, and can install wordpress quite easily, might be a good option thanks.
