Ranking .US EMD - Question

I have a EMD travel domain that has a .us extention. I've owned it for awhile and bought it right when it expired. I would like to build pages on my site for cities around they keyword. I wanted to know if it's worth it to build out and wanted to know if .US domains rank as well as .com, .net and .org.

I've heard conflicting reports, so I bought a couple the other day and decided to just test it out myself. Interested to hear if anyone has already done similar tests.
