hi,
I am doing seo for last 2 years now, and ranked my clients website to at least first page (some of them are at #1 for keywords with 20,000,000+ monthly searches) . But some times i feel like i don't know anything about seo.

So please help me a bit and tell me which of the following keyword is most competitive and why?

jokes
dog training
houses for sale in las vegas

Thank you for taking your time and reading my post.

    OK....

Without doing ANY research I'd guess dog training. "Jokes" has a LOT more results, but I'd be willing to be there are more people trying to rank for "dog training." So the top 10, and to a greater extent top 3, competition would probably be stronger.

If I were to do some research I'd be able to give you a better answer.

I think forex, trading, lawyer type stuff. SEO and IM is pretty competitive too. some health niches are hard to rank for

Dog Training is the most competitive word, because a lot of people are trying to optimize their websites for such a good word // jokes is a pretty "small" word and I am sure most people would try 'funny jokes' or 'cool jokes' or something related, but NOT only jokes. Houses for sale in Las Vegas should be a low competitive word, because it is a very "long" word with a place in the keyword (Las Vegas!)

Now the problem is that, i have ranked my client's website in top7 for dog training, #2 for jokes (not on google.com) and #3 for "funny jokes" "short jokes" .

But i am trying hard to rank a website for "houses for sale in las vegas", onpage is almost perfect and after 2 months i still can't see my website anywhere in the search results of google

I don't think this is a serious post but just in case.

All those keywords are very competitive, although none approach anywhere near 20m searches a month. If you think the following get that number of searches, then you clearly know very little about SEO.

houses for sale in las vegas - 4400 GMS
    dog training - 60,500 GMS
    jokes - 100,000 GMS

      Well UMS,
it is a very serious post.
and i don't know why, but i am unable to rank websites in real estate niche. And my two new clients are in real estate business,

Without looking anything up, my guess would be jokes. It is very generic, and people like jokes, and what better way to find out some new jokes to tell your friends than on the internet?

Amir, the only reason I thought you weren't being serious is that I would have thought that someone who's been doing SEO for 2 years would know the basic difference between broad and exact match searches and why it matters greatly (apologies if I misunderstood that you were referring the 3 keyword phrases you listed)

That said, let's see if we can help.

Is 'houses for sale in las vegas" one of the actual phrases you are trying to rank for, or is it just an example?

houses for sale in las vegas

has a very high level of competition (guess there's some big bucks to be made in Las Vegas real estate).

What level of SEO have you done for client? Has it been the same effort as you put in to rank for 'dog training'?

According to Google the most competitive keywords are words like, Weather, News, Money, things of that nature. Plus the trends of famous people, or events.

Yes I read the OP I just wanted to post some quick info (to save my spot) while I used Google Keyword tool to research.

    Jokes = Low competition
    Dog Training = Medium competition
houses for sale in las vegas = High competition

Are you aware of several softwares that you could use for determining keyword competitiveness? you can use google keyword tool here yo can view several keywords related to your niche and the percentage of competition for these keywords as well as number of monthly searches.

I also think "dog training" is most competitive. Not sure about "jokes" but may have good competition as a single word."houses for sale in las vegas" may have comparatively little competition than the other 2.However saying this without any research, just based on experience

Jokes have the most monthly searches out of the three over 20,000,000. The other two have much lower searches per month

Sometimes you have to look past Google data. Example, Las Vegas has had the highest foreclosure rate in the US. That means thousands of homes that normally wouldn't be on the market need to find buyers, which ups the competition in every possible way.

I still don't get why OP can't break into the SERPs, I mean even page #100 shouldn't take much effort.

      Something doesn't sound right.

well that was just an expression, I am in top100, website ranked at 6th page in first week, but after that it seems to stuck there.

It is not just "houses for sale in las vegas" but also other cities, like chula vista, new york etc
And yes the efforts are same.

The keywords which are very common are very competitive like services Crane hire. But the keywords which contains specific information like area name are very less competitive like- Crane Hire Dublin.
