Punished by Google, should I work on bringing the site back?

Had my site in top 10 for couple of months and now it's gone from top 100 even, only one of the sub-pages is in 7th page somewhere instead of site's homepage being in top 10. Site could have been punished for ads above the fold or the recent blog network de-indexing..
Site was making me about $0.8-1 a day and had potential to do much more, up to $10 a day I believe. Should I work on bringing it back to top or just leave it and focus on building new ones?
Lucky, it wasn't de-indexed completely tho!
