Rankings Go Bad Before Good?

I am doing some SEO on one of our sites. Today we had a sudden drop in most keyword rankings. But is this normal? Do you see a big drop sometimes before a bigger gain days later?

Also what is funny is that most of our sites, which are most-part not linked to each other all seen a slight drop in ranks. Again is this normal? Is it due to the day, coincidence, or?

Here are examples of rankings on a graph that show similar iratic behaviour. How is it best explained?
