SEO start up and a question

Hi all. I inherited a single word dot com. That single word is a pretty competitive term but has no site content yet and so no search engine traffic. (Sorry but I don't want to share the domain for now.) I don't want to sell the domain before I try to make money off it through Adsense via SEO so I know it's real value. The domain currently gets about 400 typeins per day earning about $10 in parked click revenue. I figure I can earn much more if I get search traffic.I know a little about affiliate marketing but nothing about SEO. Is there an recent online guide which encapsulates the high level generalities of doing SEO properly? I'm reading through posts here but it seems like there's so much conflicting opinions. Also my general question... Can I actually get some search traffic with a single page on the domain or do I need to develop a whole site?

I will be honest with you. It will be very difficult to rank for a competitive single word keyword. For someone new to SEO, it can be discouraging to start out with a difficult project like this one.

It will likely take a long time to even get to the first page. However, I am not familiar with your situation. If you could answer these questions I might be able to help you out more:

    - How old is the domain?
    - Has the domain had content on it in the past?
    - Has the domain ranked for the keyword in the past? (this one may be difficult to know)
    - What is the PR of the domain?

Also, are you making $10 a day just from domain parking? If so, you could easily sell the domain on Flippa.com for $3,000 (probably more)?

Craig B is right... It is probably going to be hard to rank especially if you are brand new to seo. I'm sure it can be done but it's just a matter of time and experience.

There are a ton of resources available on this forum, but just starting out not knowing anything about seo... it's going to be an uphill battle
