Hello,

I am in dilemma.

I have settled on a company name for my company and I have .net, .org, .co domains for that name but .com domain name is owned by someone else is asking $5K for it.

What should I do?

Should I go ahead and build my company name around the .net domain. I see that authorize.net has done it. Can you think of any other examples?

Any advice would help.

Thanks.

Obviously a .com is much more preferred and desirable but a .net is fine too. It's just personal preference.

I wouldn't really worry about it that much, now a .biz and .info are the ones you really want to stay away from!

      Thanks Candres79.

Do you know of any other companies using .net as primary domain?
I just want to make sure I am making the right decision.

It's fine. Once you build your brand and trademark your name you'll be able to get a hold of it without paying a single penny.

@jackncoke64 - I don't really care for ranking for this Domain since this will be the corporate website. I was more worried from Branding point of view if .net would be a good option.

@Ben - Thanks. So if I develop the brand and trademark the name, I can go after the .com owner?

Yes, definitely. .Net would still be enough but if your brand gets big you can definitely get a hold of it. However, since he registered the domain before you registered your company it may be harder to get a hold of it but it is definitely possible. My friend has done if for a six figure domain -- although it cost him a few grand in the process of suing another guy, he still got his domain.

Ben, That's good to know. I will need to work on the Brand.

Any one else with experience or knowledge with this?

If the guy who own .com want $5k that means he is not really using the domain, I would say move on for .net

If one day you changed ur mind you can buy the .com, or who knows maybe one day he forgot to renew it and you get with backorder
