Just say my keyword is "blue widgets" and the page i am targetting is widgets.com/blue-widgets. Why am I getting ranked for widgets.com???

    Maybe because nobody uses "widgets.com" as their keyword? Do you rank for the keyword widgets?

    the word "widgets" is my site name which is a generic name,nothing to do with the product im trying to rank. Im very confused by this

    Most sites usually rank for their own domain name, without even trying.

    So, ranking for the domain name isn't the problem, the problem is the actual keyword. You need some authority pages/links pointing at the page you want ranked. You also need on-page optimization (not keyword stuffing, just saying).
