Drive traffic directly to money site or....?

Which of these 2 approaches do you think is more effective. If my money site sells widgets of all shapes and colors, should I optimize the individual pages (www.mywidgets.cxm/bluewidgets for example) and then build back links to those pages, or better to build multiple mini-sites, maybe WP blogs (blue-widgets.com, roundredwidgets.com etc.) optimized for just those keywords to drive traffic to the money site for the actual sales? One thing to keep in mind in my case is that my money site is based on a CMS and is somewhat limited in terms of tweaking the internal linking structure etc, although I can edit page titles, meta-tags...still not as flexible as a WP blog would be.

    From my experience go with one domain and optimize pages
