Pet Site Tanked Today

My pet site has just dropped off the map for search results, less than a week after getting the dreaded unnatural linking penalty. I have no legit defense. BMR was used on the site, along with some other common types of spammy backlinks, and in my consideration request I submitted, I was very honest with G. No point trying to beat around the bush, as G have link checking tools that we Webmasters can only dream of having...
My rankings that have plummitted were gained mainly via BMR, so I can understand why they would suddenly tank due to the massive dis-indexation of BMR's sites. I had actually requested my links be removed from the network anyway, all 800 of them. As for the other blog comments that I consider spammy that I have, there is no way for me to remove these as they are in some cases, on sites that are 2 years old and I have no way of contacting all the webmasters who probably could care less anyway at this point. Ironically, the rankings that the site had were not even that good, but all of them are now nowhere to be found. I will not reveal the keywords that I was ranking for, because really doing so serves 0 purpose here.
Going forward, I am not willing to give up on my site, (sig) because it is my first actual site and I am attached to it if you will. Is there a way to check if I have been hit with a penalty, or is this more a case of me simply needing to replace the hundreds of lost links with fewer quality ones to regain my rank? If this is the case, I wwill work hard to make this happen. I have replied to G and inquired if this is indeed the case, but am not holding my breath for a response.

You dropped in the SERPs because you lost 800 links that were the reason for your pages ranking.

Your sig. site (dogs) has 712 pages indexed (site:domain.com), therefore no penalty.

    Rebuild quality links...

I understand that with the massive loss in backlinks that my pages will take a hit, but I still do not know if this means I have also been hit with a penalty or not. Either way, I will be trying my best to give the site a good name when it comes to its backlinking profile and hope for the best.

If you are still indexed but you lost a lot of rankings on many keywords then you've got a penalty.

Yeah. If people understood penalty, loss of backlinks,
drop in SERPs, etc., they might not run around talking
        nonsense.

Devaluing backlinks and dropping in SERPs is not a penalty.
It's getting back to where your site should normally fall
when the real dust settles. Stir up the dust again.

        De-indexing is a penalty.

The problem is people panic & don't think clearly because of so many others yelling "The sky is falling!", they automatically assume they have been penalized.

OPs site is clearly still indexed (no penalty).

People, If you lose a large amount of decent links, you will drop in the SERPs!

          It's not rocket surgery.

Guys there is no way to know whether a site that dropped also has a penalty. so those saying he does and those saying he doesn't have no way of knowing. Yes the loss of all those links may explain it but you can certainly have both at the same time it does not have to be one or the other.

I agree with this. Phrase-based penalties exist and so does 'dropping because of deindexed links.' Both could exist at the same time too.

This could take months to sort out.

    Paul,

What about the Google -40/50 penalty where all your keyword rankings drop to no higher than 40/50 in the serps and you are still indexed ?

      That's not a real penalty.

I understand what both Yukon and Paul are saying about the loss of 800 links, this is obviously going to decrease the page's rankings.

But even still, if you build 800 more decent ones will the site go back to what it was?
I highly doubt it, the site is doomed until Google removes this 'penalty' or whatever you want to call it.

They tell you to submit a reconsideration request for a reason, and until the bad links are removed or they deem your site acceptable once more, you are going to stay badly ranked.

The notice is quite obviously generated algorithmically, but will not be removed until manual action is taken. Only then will you be able to rank normally again.

    Thoughts?

I think if you build more quality links the site will rise again.

With regards to removing bad links, how does Google expect you to remove lots of links you have no control over, especially if you cannot contact site owners?

Well this is the problem everyone is facing. Realistically there is no possible way. The only way to do so is to ask all webmasters to remove the links and 99+% will ignore the request. It's just a massive waste of time asking.

I've had the same unnatural links message to one of my sites (the only one in webmaster tools coincidently) - other sites have kept rankings.

I think i'm just goign to have to put this down to lack of expeirence using the likes of BMR and ALN etc.

I can't see Google removing my 'penalty' since there is no way i can remove the bad links.

Did you keep a note of what your rankings were for that site on a regular basis, before you started using BMR?

I have a couple of sites that I used BMR for and the rankings are now lower than they were before I started using BMR, which kind of indicates that there is some sort of penalty in place, but not an all out deindexing of the site. I have a few others that used BMR that haven't had any change in rankings.

    Cheers,
    Suzanne
