Competition analysis for large online e-commerce sites

Hi all,
Most of my sites are product based where I promote products for various merchants (i.e. no adsnese). Most of the time I find that my competition are large e-commerce based websites that have numerous links to the entire domain but very few to the specific page. In some cases I have been succesful ranking with my content and with high PR backlinks. In other cases I can't seem to get passed the exact same sites that I outrank for other keywords.
Is there some metric I am missing when judging these large sites? For instance, if they have numerous links to the entire domain, and are optimized for the title but only have a few backlinks should I stay away?
Most of the guides I have read focus on looking at backlinks to specific pages, but I think when you are dealing with large e-commerce type niches you are dealing with something different. Does anyone have any advice?
