"Re-optimize" or leave the same?

I have a few websites that have ranked #1 on "fairly large" ( > 20k/m) keywords for the past 6-8 months with hardly any link building... Well I made these sites 1-2 yrs ago when I was sort of a newb... and they are "over-optimized".
I mean to say, when I do CTRL+F and look for the main keyword, it's stuffed mainly in the first article... NOT the way I do on-page SEO nowadays.
Interestingly, some of them have increased in traffic since the last update (only ~a week worth of data..), and I can't help but scratch my head. I wonder if it's b/c I never used ALN or BMR..
If I change the content, rank drops / fluctuations are almost guaranteed... but if I leave it the same I may get hit by the upcoming over-op update.
