What factors-like that ones that show the seoquake plugin- should I be looking at that the top 10 search results in google have for a certain keyword. This would be for me to try to figure out whether I can have a chance of ranking for a keyword in the top 10 google search results for that keyword.Should I be checking for the number of inbound link?

For example, for the search term: buy satellite direct

https://www.google.com.ni/search?rlz...tellite+direct

there are 10 sites that appear in the above google search results. What factors should I check out about these sites if I were to want to rank among them for this keyword?

You are best advised to purchase a good keyword research tool ie the likes of Traffic Travis will tell you exactly how hard it is to rank, and give you a readout of all the ranking factors.

Download free version of Traffic Travis, that will do work for you/aid you.

    But look at things like

    backlinks
    PR
    age of domain
    keyword in title
    keyword in description
    keyword in h1 tag
whether any of the domain are EMD domains or just sub pages of sites
whether any of the pages are article sites
whether any links from one site is repeated (i.e 2 different subpages from same root url).

Some of the things I look at.

I haven't done a check on this keyword, however:

Look at the sites url's that appear. You may see sites like wikipaedia and other authority sites. It will be difficult to rank above these.

Look at domain age, backlinks to the domain and to the page that is being ranked for that keyword.

If you see any sites with low number of backlinks and kw rich TLD's, this may be a sign that with some work you may be able to get a kw rich domain to rank here.

Sign up to Majestic SEO for a free account and investigate the types of backlinks these sites have.

Do an exact match search in google by enclosing the keyword in quote marks e.g "satellite direct" and check the number of competing sites in the results. If its more than say 50,000 then you have some work to do. I've just done that and there's about 2,300,000 results. So it looks like competition may be high.

I may be wrong but it looks like all the top spots are filled with affiliate-type domains already.

I hope this helps you to get started?

Buy satellite direct in quotation marks has 365,000 search results. Should I try to rank?

Of all the factors mentioned above, which one has the most weight for finding out if you can rank or not for a top 10 search position? Is it backlinks?

They all play an important part, can't single out one and ignore the rest.

well for on page seo title, h1, h2 word around the page etc. Offpage the key is links and anchor text in those links.

Having had a quick look I would say you could rank for it, but having seen it only gets 28 global exact matches according to GKT I don't know whether you would want to bother. Then again depends on what longtails you might be able to rank for as well.

Looking at the top spot there is nothing at all on the site in way of content except for being optimized for that one kw phrase in the single post on there which was posted at the end of November and having the exact match domain name.

yes it looks like only 28 exact matches I think I should try to rank for satellite direct which has 22,200 exact searches.

Just dont expect #1 position as that site has over 50k links.

#2 has over 1k, and sites in top 4 apart from number 2 have pr between 2-4...Positions 3 and 4 are possible with couple hundred links but will take bit of time to get the PR/trust.

Bottom half of page 1 is a more realistic target, still need least 100 good links though.

Then you ask yourself whether it is worth it, 22k exact hits, thats less then 800 searches a day, and if youre in bottom half you will be lucky to see about 5% of that.

These 3 things mean it will be DIFFICULT to rank for a keyword:
#1. Keyword in Title (single most important on-page SEO factor)

    #2. 1,000+ Backlinks to Domain

#3. Brand Name URLs (Like Nike's official website for "Nike running shoes"; Nike, incidentally, uses a second domain to make sure they rank the top 3 spots for that keyword)
These 3 things mean it will be EASY to rank for a keyword:
#1. Multiple affiliate sites, blogs or ecommerce sites.

#2. One or two exact match domains that are NOT brand name URLs or any domains less than a year old

#3. Any domains that are free to publish content on, such as Squidoo, Wordpress, Blogger or any article directory

Bonus #4. Very few PPC ads (not always a direct correlation to SEO competition, but you'd be surprised; always a good sign you've found a gem)
And last but not least, I'll go ahead and point out that this is outdated advice, and is not relevant to determining the difficulty penetrating page 1:

This is common advice, but the fact of the matter is that we don't care how many competing pages there are. You're not trying to get your site to rank #49,991 or #20,000 or even #50...You want #1-#3.

The only thing you need to look at is the Top 10 or Page 1 of the SERPs, and sometimes the second page just for good measure if you're (A) being really thorough and (B) trying to rank for a keyword with enough traffic where it's actually still worth it even being on the second page.

@DudleyDog - Really liked and agreed with the rest of your post, no offense intended! Just setting the record straight.

When is it worth being on the second page of search results? Is it when the search results are above a certain number? So i can consider myself lucky if I get around 40 hits a day if I can rank in the bottom half of the first page?
