Why is ezine outranking my website?

I posted high quality content on my website, waited for it to get indexed, then posted to ezine. Now the ezine is ranked # 14 on google for the keyword and my website page (with the same exact content) isn't even in the top 200 results. Any ideas?

Ezine has a lot more authority than your website does...

Have you made any other backlinks?

My website is brand new so I can understand ezine has more authority. But now does this mean my site will never appear for that search term because the ezine article already got indexed for it? I've heard google will index one instance of the content, then all others will go in the supplementary... So is my site doomed for this keyword now or is there a way to get my website to outrank my ez article?

      Your website will be fine!!!

Just build backlinks to it, it won't get anywhere without them :p

Wow where did you read that? That is so wrong, it's dead easy to outrank Ezine.

What he said is that he's heard it's difficult to rank duplicate content.

I clearly hear him asking if his site will never rank for that search term cause Ezine has it indexed already. And fact is that Ezine, despite being the largest authority in their niche, is the easiest of all authority sites in general to outrank. Heck, a dozen bookmarks will probably be enough already.

Actually, content is only duplicate content when posted on the same site.

The same content across multiple sites is syndication.

      Exactly so.

      This is temporary.

All Google's 2011 (and ongoing) Panda updates have all-but-destroyed the ranking potential of article directories. Ezine Articles is about as far from an "authority site" as it's possible to get, and it will be trivially easy for you to outrank it. But, admittedly, as you've already wisely appreciated, not while your site is brand new! :p

The important thing - as always, for any kind of article marketing - is to publish your articles on your own site first, and have them indexed there before submitting them anywhere else, so that you (and not an article directory) can gradually accumulate the collective long-term benefit of all the initial indexation rights.

Every time you do this, in this order, you're moving closer to outranking the copies of your articles on Ezine Articles.

No; it absolutely doesn't mean that at all.

That can change. And will. Don't imagine that what's "in the supplemental index" is stuck there. Nor even that it's "in the supplemental index" for all the keywords under which it can be looked up. It's much more flexible than that. An article which is initially indexed on your own site, when your site's brand new, may temporarily be outranked by the EZA copy. That's happened to me, too, with plenty of sites. But now it's the copy on my site that's ranking highly in the main index, and the EZA copy is nowhere to be found in Google, which is as it should be, of course.

      Absolutely not!

Yes. Just keep adding high quality content to your own site and checking that it's indexed there before letting it go anywhere else.

Some backlinks will also help this process - specifically, relevant ones. Don't start using cheap, mass-backlinking services, whatever you do: Google is on the rampage against those, at the moment, and it's much more likely to do harm than good. But when people republish your articles on their own relevant sites, those backlinks will soon improve your site's off-page SEO.

It may help you to note that, without going through it line by line and picking it apart, some of the "advice" and statements offered above are totally wrong. As so often, in threads like this, there are responses from people who seem not to appreciate the difference between "duplicate content" and "syndicated content", as well as comments from people who are simply unfamiliar with how article directories work. This sometimes does make it pretty difficult to use the forum for "getting advice". (You can rely on Terra, and Jeremiah, above, anyway! ).

Its just a matter of time when your site will outrank ezine, concentrate on building backlinks from sites in your niche.

So when content is syndicated google will put one instance in their main index (of the most authoritative site) and all other syndexed will go in the supplementary index? I guess what I'm asking is can two instances of the same exact content show up in the google search results. Maybe I just misunderstood when I heard that before.

200 instances of the exact same content can show up in the google search results, no kidding. If they all have solid links there is no boundary to it.

It's quite possible to dominate a page in Google with the same article/content on various sites.

It's not the easiest thing to do, but can still be done.

Google looks for original content, having the same content on different websites is not good...in googles eyes anyways.

        That's not true at all.

Most major news outlets depend on syndication as a matter of fact.

RULE #1: MAKE YOUR OWN SITE'S CONTENT UNIQUE

Then create an entirely NEW piece of content for syndication purposes.

So it's normal for one instance on the content to be at #14 (ezine article) and the other at 500+ (my website page)?

Well yes, but it doesn't have to be that way. As the others have already stated, you can get your original content to outrank the ezines one with various marketing techniques including links.

So now you'll have 50 copies of the same article posted on multiple sites via EZA.

Why would you want that associated with your own sites content?

I've heard it's better to post to my site first, then to EZA. Is that not true? Will EZA post to other sites?

EZA won't post to other sites, but EZA is set up so that it is quite easy for other people to come and "borrow" your content for their own sites, as long as they keep it intact.

This is why you should create unique quality content for your site, where it is ONLY on your site. After that create another quality piece of content that you will use for syndication purposes.

I understand that backlinks will help of course. I just thought it was odd that the same content would rank that highly on ezine and not in the top 500 on a website.

As you've stated your website is new.

Continue to add fresh quality content to it and that will also help in ranking.

With new sites, Google isn't always sure where it should be in the rankings and it can move around quite a bit.

As you add more relevant content, you should begin to see it rank higher as long as you aren't using methods to try and game the system such as keyword stuffing, for example.

Keyword density is 1.1% and it is a very well written article. The site has 20+ pages of very high quality content focusing on various LSI and long tail keywords. I was just surprised when I saw my ezine at the top of page 2 and my site not even in top 500 lol. It's not something I've seen before so threw me off a bit.

My website is also relatively new (3 months old) and It's ranked higher than ezine now (for that few articles).. you have to make sure that your website is not de-index by google.. play around with blackhat strategies will get your website into serious trouble

Everytime I have a new article on my website I just submit them to digg, facebook, twitter.. and after a few days it's rank higher than ezine (it's really not difficult to rank higher than ezine at all) <-- This works for me, I'm just sharing my experience..

Whether you like it or not, there's really more to SEO than just building and buying cheap backlinks, blachhat backlinks will work in the short term but NOT in the long term! I know what I'm talking about..

    Hope this help,

Thanks for the tips Jeremiah. I'm not doing anything black hat. Have just launched my site with 100% high quality content. Each page has 700-1,500 words of content written by a very skilled writer from the US. My site got indexed pretty fast and most pages were #30-#200 right from the start, then within a few weeks they all dropped to 200+

The only backlinking I have done is put up some videos on youtube, vimeo, metacafe... No blasting of low quality links or anything. I'm in the process of posting high quality re-written (not spun) articles to top 20 web 2.0 and blog sites online. Creating bookmarks manually to all sites. Just checked and I'm not de-indexed so that's good.

When you say "submit" them to facebook and twitter. Do you mean you create twitter and facebook accounts for your website? Or do you get on another facebook site and "share" the content or mention it? There are two ways to use twitter and facebook for backliniking and I'm trying to figure out which is better. Setting up an official account for your site, or have others post likes, share, tweet about your site...
