I would keep building some links.
I think a full stop will look un natural to Goolge.
If the keyword is bringing good traffic, it is also a good idea to make sure
    the competitors don’t catch up..

If you get the #1 spot and have a quality site, your visitors should do most of the work for you. I'd still do some, but cut back and keep an eye on it.

Although, if there are other keywords your site can rank for, focus on those keywords you're not #1 for.

If your competitor does quality link then your site's ranking for keywords may go down. Building links for your site may help you to maintain your position in SERP.

Yea I definitely would keep building a few links. You don't want to ease off now and you want to keep that link profile looking natural.

No, you should not stop link building... Otherwise your competitors will easily take you over. SEO is ongoing process and its better to do optimization to maintain your ranking.

Of course you should continue building backlinks constantly, because your competitors can outrank you any moment... The harder thing is right now... You should keep this position as longer as you can!

I always continue to linkbuild not only to maintain the ranking, but also so Google doesn't see it as too unnatural if I sink and have to scale it up a little bit. Going from a small amount per day to a larger blast probably is a red flag but going from nothing to a huge amount is tell tale spam.

As you already achieved #1 for your keyword, I think now you should focus on quality links....try to build some quality link regularly....it will look like natural and you will never loose ranking.

This depends on the competition. If other competing sites are bigger sites, it's not as likely as a niche site to compete for that particular keyword aggressively. In anycase, it does not hurt to get some (quality) links regularly so that you will be ahead in either way.

If you have the quality content then i will advice you to keep building backlinks slowly and steadily, and you will not go in google dance, but if your content quality is little low then you should think about improving your content quality also in spite of creating new backlinks.

What people are referring to is called 'link velocity'. That is the rate at which backinks accumulate.

Too many at one time is not always a good thing, and the same goes for a steady stream of new links that is suddenly cut off.

I agree with other that you should continue to build some links, but you do not need to do it as aggressively as you might have in the past.

Focus on quality of links, not quantity of links.

I know many people are gonna disagree with this but i would seriously reduce your link building to just a trickle of decent links. Too many links and you're in danger of receiving the dreaded unnatural links detected message.

Keeping link velocity maintained is old news. With the recent unnatural links detected penalty the best method is to get to position 1 with as few backlinks as possible then reduce link building down to a trickle of decent links with natural anchor text i.e. 'click here', 'visit site', URL etc.

The best way to do this is to ensure your content is good enough to attract natural links without you creating them, then you can use link building to push for position 1 and then kick back and relax knowing you're attracting a steady stream of natural links that will maintain your ranking and in the long run dilute the unnatural links down

One other thing i should add - the view that a sudden change in incoming link velocity looks odd is completely wrong.

Incoming link velocity varies dramatically all the time. Run Link Research Tools or SEO Majestic on Matt Cutts blog and you will see the link velocity is up and down massively.

Natural sites attract links in bursts that often correlate to an addition or change in content on the site.

I've never seen a natural site that gets a steady 10 links a day for 6 months.

You can still work on it for 10 minutes for a week.

    That will be enough .

And you will get indirect seo for your website through social networking shares by your visitors.
