Multiple blog to promote

My colleague tell me he owns 18 blogs, and all of them is about nuptials DJ in Los Angeles just to promote his main website. What I don't understand is how would owning multiple website in the same niche help in terms of SEO?
Let's say my main website that I am trying to SEO is weddwwingdj.com and I bought 3 new websites:

los angelesweddingdj.com
wedding-dj-la.com
laweddingdiscjockey.com

the only thing I can do is to utilize those 3 new websites to make a bank link to Wedding Vendors, Wedding Planning Software,right? Isn't that merely 3 backlines to the main website?

Or is it that if I made backlines from 5 pages of each of the new websites linking back to Wedding Vendors, Wedding Planning Software, F

Should I keep on using new posts from those 3 new websites to generate as many links back to the main weddingdj.com?

    Building a bajillion links from the same website isn't going to do much for your SEO efforts.

    They need to be from different domains and hosted on different IPs.

    Think practically can you promote all blogs in same time?
    Better way is to use two or three one time and promote.
