Anyway, I used to use Market Samurai but forced myself to learn the filtering features of Excel & OpenOffice (LibreOffice now.) It is SO much more powerful. I love being able to filter a list of 25,000+ keywords with the press of a few buttons.

For example, you can set a filter to show only phrases that are 7 or more words long, get 1,000+ searches, and have a high amount of Adwords competition with just a few clicks.

It's pretty easy to find a bunch of low competition long-tails this way.

I know MS can do the same. But it is painfully slow.

you know how to filter strings in the spreadsheets???

do you use VB or something to do that??

I use them all depending on what I'm looking for, just a feeling.. rough competition evaluation, stealth keyword comp analyzer... then a second opinion from MNF, or market samurai if I really want to see the details of a site's backlink profile. To see what I have to do to rank above them.

I've been thinking about putting together some video tutorials. Maybe even a WSO on the entire method of KW research that I follow from start to scratch. But since it's not a WSO promising $xxx in 1 day, I'm not sure it'd sell very well.

But it does help me find a LOT of really good long tail keywords.

Here's an example of the filtering feature from one of my keyword lists in LibreOffice:

This list has a little over 16k keywords from a single niche. Took about an 45 minutes to put it together. Some may find it a tiny bit time consuming, but it's worth it.

The first rule of marketing is positioning. It's all about how you position your new WSO. I encourage you to pursue it as you seem to really appreciate it and know a lot about it and I know for certain there's not much else in the way of spreadsheets around here.

You've already inspired me to pull out a spreadsheet and make my own list.

Once I forced myself to learn the basics of Excel / Calc (LibreOffice) I was mad that I didn't do it sooner. Makes most of the other KW tools seem pretty terrible in comparison.

The Google Keyword tool is free. LibreOffice is free. And the other tools I use to generate keywords are free. Together they're all MUCH more powerful than any program I've used.

I am going to bump this old thread. I am interested in how you determine competition and how you define Relatively Easy?

I just see an advertiser competition number and high advertiser competition is a good thing.

From Traffic Travis. (The free version lets you analyze the top 10 competition of up to 5 phrases at once. Then it provides a "difficultly" for the keyword / phrase.) TT is not 100% accurate. But it does give you a good general idea of the competition. I always dig in deeper and manually research the keywords I REALLY want to go after.

how do you get so many keywords when googles keyword tool only lets you export 800 keywords?

I am using Market Samurai and Google Keyword tool.

I think both of them are really good. The only difference for both of them is that Google keyword tool is free and MS is not. But MS is a good buy too and a lot of use for your website promotion.

My problem with the keyword research module in MS is that it uses the Google Keyword Tool but is a LOT slower. Why not just go straight to the source and bypass MS?

Google Adwords Keyword Tool is a good place to start, but it can be very time consuming doing all the competition analysis manually (you don't get that information from GAKT).

I've used many keyword tools, and I personally think SECockpit is way ahead of the field.

Try Google Adwords keyword tool to get some suggestion on the keywords for your website. You can use the same tool to check the competitor website's keywords and the competition for a keyword (in one year avg. basis).

The best ones i tried are Google Adwords Keyword tool and semrush.com . These sites give you more accurate results. But the best one in my opinion is still Google Adwords Keyword tool because it has the most accurate database.
