I have been on the first page for this KW for a few months, after the new Panda update I got knocked to page 2, #15 and replaced with some of the most ridiculous sites ever....here is a breakdown...

1. Company site
2. Company site
3. EMD with 60 backlinks, not much anchor diversity at all, 5 badly written posts on homepage, no ads anywhere
4. **** berry site, with a page that has KW (note that **** berry has nothing to do with this niche), blasted with hundreds of shady backlinks (ALN, xrumer, blog comments) using several different anchors, about 25% KW, 25% partial KW, 25% KW bolded
5. Digg.com post from an .insite, 0 backlinks, now this is the strangest one of all. Somebody used yahoo answers to post an answer with their link then bookmarked it on an Indian bookmarking site, then Bookmarked that bookmark on Digg. So maybe money site >> yahoo answers >> bookmark >> bookmark works well now? I don't even see how a digg post with 0 backlinks is anywhere near the top results but let's keep moving.
6. Wordpress.com site, again 5 badly written posts on home page, no ads anywhere, 6 backlinks total!
7. Niche site, very professional looking, about 1k backlinks with diverse anchors, this site should be somewhere in top 3 spots in my opinion
8. Blogspot blog, again 5 terribly spun posts on homepage, no ads anywhere, 1 backlink total
9. RetailmeNot - 200k backlinks, no surprise here really since it's a big authority site
10. Now for the best part, an edublogs (web 2.0) article that I posted 2 weeks ago, it has 26 backlinks from ALN lol

My site is #15 after that latest panda update (was bouncing around #3-4 previously), it is 1 year old and has 330 backlinks that are mainly KW1 or KW2 (not much anchor diversity). I noticed a lot of sites on page #1 were using a pretty high ratio of the actual URL as anchor text so my plan is to add a few of those to see if I can get my ranking back.

I still can't believe the freaking digg post is #5!!

Summary of results: Google is now fond of badly spun web 2.0 posts/sites with very few backlinks and sites with high anchor diversity. I hope they are happy now! :p

Yeah, I would have to agree. There are some very strange things going on in the search results now, sites that definitely should not be ranking are and in some cases, for some pretty competitive search terms.

Do a search in google.com for "make money online" without the quotes. The #4 or #5 listing, a blogspot blog with zero content. In fact, the serp description says No Posts No Posts. lol

It looks like G is just rolling out old random pages, that used to rank. Seems like a cycle to me, that goes back to what it was earlier.
Hmm, that is interesting. I have seen a number of really poor search results lately. Some very competitive terms in the health and finance niches that are returning results like poorly written hubpages, wordpress.com blogs and squidoo lenses.

I also noticed that my sites which have over 1000 pages of content indexed are doing better than ever without any noticeable increase in rankings. In fact, one of my sites has over 5000 pages indexed and dropped in rankings for its main search terms but is getting more traffic than it used to, all from longtail terms that haven't been targeted specifically.

I have also heard that many of the big eCommerce sites are doing really well through all of this, even with their lack of content on the pages. Almost seems like domains that have over "x" amount of pages/content are being considered authorities and getting a little bit of extra love.

Which would kind of make sense, as doing so would allow google to weed out the small niche sites that got so popular. So while a hubpage may not have a lot of content per each page or sub domain, the domain as a whole ie. hubpages.com has a ton of pages indexed therefor getting the boost as well to individual hubs.

p.s. I have been dominating a competitive finance niche for several years with a large website and just recently (couple of weeks ago) got knocked back a spot by a wordpress.com blog newly created with no visible backlinks and only two pages of content, none of which really relates to the search term directly.

In my opinion, guys at Google are slowly losing their head, and they don't know what are they doing. They trying to do something, but obviously it doesn't makes any sense regarding the quality. This what you wrote here is really really odd.

Yes and I don't know what they are trying to accomplish. Internet marketers are mad and regular users are getting terrible results. Maybe this is just google's way of forcing people to use adwords.
