Outranking Competitors - Keyword Research or Meta Data?

Hello,

I want to start the process of ranking our site for several keywords. There are a number of competitors in our field that I want to outrank. I have some ideas on keyword phrases that I want to use but what's the most efficient way to find out what our competitors are ranking for?

I feel that I am missing some effective keyword phrases and want to see what they are 'doing'.

Any ideas on how to move forward with this?

Cheers,

Dave

If you look at their Meta tags you'll generally see their target search terms. Then you can go to alexa.com, type in their URL and click 'get details' then you'll see the most popular search terms under which their site is found.
Beyond that there are tools which allow you to enter your competitor url to see how they're ranking on specific search terms, but you need to know what those terms are, generally, to use the tools.

Take a look at what keywords they have in their title tags, and which ones are in their header tags. See if they are doing any interlinking between pages on their site.

You can also run a report at ahrefs.com where you can see what keywords they might already be ranking for.

In the end though, it doesn't necessarily matter. You can probably find some better keywords if you spend some time doing some research.
