This is possible, since I've read some other experiences that says "the ugliest ad looks, more clicks it gets" . I didn't try it personally, but I sure will in the near future.

hahaha. Would this fall under the "shock marketing" category? I have a feeling this would work better with guys than girls, but who knows.

Ever heard from the 'Green Knight' approach?

    -Yellow Border
    -Green Background
    -Yellow Text

It curses with a lot of websites. Just like WF. You will definitely get noticed. Though a lot of people like style, look at Ryan's sig for example. Already clicked twice today, because I love that monster.

I personally liked the "crappy ad" because it was easier on the eyes.

I forgot where I saw the study, but someone had tested and found that the simple stop sign on white background and simple black text way out did any other well designed ads - consistently.

But I thought this was well known here on the WF with all those simple ad banners on top of the forum - excellent CTR based on the findings.

There may be a simple reason and that is aversion. Most people are tired of ads and they have an automatic aversion to clicking on yet another ad (like TV commercials - most don't like them).

But seeing that ugly duckling makes you want to see what's behind the effort (or lack of). Then, are you getting traffic that is genuinely interested in buying your widget?

MEANS NOTHING ... conversion rate means everything. Yeah, the crap ad got more clicks, but I highly doubt that meant he made more conversions. I would like on the ad too, because of curiosity, but that doesn't mean I would buy anything or sign up for anything.

Nope, pretty sure profit means everything. The equation is revenue - cost, me thinks so.
