Need advice in regards to keyword research (nr. of competing sites) for adsense earnings

so we have lots of threads and ideas in regards to how to make money with adsense.
One thing i always hear is to go for markets where there is not an extreme number of competing sites. (Reason: It is easier to shoot for a Top #10 Google position for keywords where there are not millions of competitors.)
Now there's a problem: If you get a hold of any of the current "highest paying adsense keywors lists" - you can assume that MOST of those keywords have a HUGE number of competing sites.
(Say: "Student Loans .... )
I need to know, in terms of real NUMBERS using software (eg. market samurai or KW Elite) what exactly is a good number of competing sites - respective what number would indicate nothing more than a waste of energy to even *attempt* to rank with those sites/keyphrases?
Less competition - easier to get top ranking in Google <--
I am using market samurai...but i also dont see any relationship between its SEOC value and (in comparison) if i do a Google search with "returned sites" found.
Anyone have any pointers?
