Experiencing Huge Ranking Drop in Google?

Have you notice a significant across-the-board ranking drop for any of your sites? I was in many 5-10 positions that dropped to 40-50 and many 10-20 positions that dropped to 60-120.

My site has quality, unique content and has been indexed for 6 months. I've been building backlinks at a fast rate for the past 1.5 months and my ranking grew very well. I slowed down the backlinking in the past 2 weeks worrying that I might be over doing it, and a few days ago my ranking plummeted. Is this just me, or is Google screwing around with the algorithm?

How are you building your links? I've heard that Google has recently adjusted the value of links from Social Media sites (Web2.0) like Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc... If your links are all coming from that arena, you may have taken a real hit. If not, then it's probably the Dance.

Yes, a lot of my links were coming from social bookmarking. I was hitting those sites very hard. AlleyCat, did you have a lot of social bookmarking links too?

Mine went from 1-3 to 18th overnight and has stayed there the last few days. OUCH that niche normally gets about 1000-1200 searches a day

I never use SB sites to get links. I use them simply to get my sites and pages indexed within 24hrs. If you focus on one tactic, if Google devalues those links your in trouble. Spread your link building across different methods then you won't take a big hit.

I'm building links through blog comments, forums comments, articles, and directories as well, but this week's hit was pretty bad. I've only been backlinking for 1.5 months, so I haven't built up a solid foundation of non-SB links yet. I wonder if Google's going to ease-up on their SB downgrade.
