Are there any differences between using blogspot to create micro niche sites or use webhosting like hostgator, godaddy, etc?

There is a huge difference. Sites such as blogspot and wordpress.com (don't confuse them with the self-hosted wordpress.org sites), leave you with no control. You can spend days putting together a great site, only to have it taken down overnight. This type of site is for personal blogging only; any sites you build with commercial intent can and will be removed.

But when I checked with Blogger, the blog could be monetized with adsense..

I've build plenty of adsense sites using blogger and never had a problem, as you said they make it easy for you to monetize your blog with adsene or amazon. I don't think they like affilate links to much though.

how long does it take for your site to be approved by adsense? i want to try moving to blogger as they seem a free alternative to paid webhosting.

I got my adsense approved by setting up a blogger account and that was so long ago I can't remember how long it took.

It depends on if you want to be in control of your site or not. Wordpress/Blogspot can remove your life's work overnight if you put all your work on there.
