I've read a lot of different opinions on this so hard to know what's right and what's not.

Lets say I rank for a certain keyword at #3 without any outbound links on that page. Now I decide to start renting out homepage links and place 10 outbound links on that page.

Will my keyword drop?

Many seo experts are having different opinions on this and you don't seem to be so sure yourself either or you would've probably answered it

      From theory point of view:

More outbound links means less linkjuice to innerpages of the site. Innerpages help strengthen the homepage when using correct internal linking so when the innerpages get less juice they can also pass back less juice to the homepage so the keyword would drop. (assuming the innerpages use anchor txt for that keyword to point to the homepage).

However I beleive certain warriors with 1000's of posts have claimed differently before so thats why I brought it up again.

Outbound link reduces the juice to your main page. Well the question here is - do you make more money by placing links there or do you make more money by having no links there?

The answer is in the bottom line. If you make money then go for the direction of making money.

Having said that ...have out bound links to a good neighborhood is good .. so maybe you want to also check on your clientelles

A while ago I removed the links to good neighbourhoods to see if it would affect my rankings. Nothing changed. Although it seems to sound like common seo knowlegde I've never seen it proven.

        Hi nik0,

Generally speaking, linking to external websites does not harm your own page's rankings, unless you are linking to bad neighborhoods. When you place a link to an external website you are personally vouching for that website, unless you include the "nofollow" attribute in the anchor.

Are you sharing some of your link juice with external web pages? Yes, but this isn't always a bad thing. If it is helpful and relevant to your users, then Google will often recognize that and enhance the trust and authority of your page. One of the best ways to propel your pages to the top of the SERP is to earn a hub site designation within Google's index.

If you are "selling" links then you should be using the nofollow attribute on those links and clearly indicate to your users that it is a "sponsored" link. Otherwise, you will be in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and subject to having your website removed from Google's index.

Interesting read about hub sites but might be a bit outdated

At the moment I'm in the process of setting up my own private blog network, contrary to what most people do I am building multiple niche related mini blog networks for different sets of clients. That way it looks more real and I could sell blogroll links and contextual links, I don't think I would sell any links when adding a nofollow tag though. But as Google likes it to link out to related sites then it shouldn't be much of a problem.

What's great is that when you build and maintain solid sites, that most clients won't need more then a dozen links, and often 5 links is enough already to get them on the 1st page. Personally my plan is to make these sites as real as possible in such way that the site will also rank on it's own and make money on CPA/affiliate and perhaps even Adsense while at the same time cashing in by renting out links.

Anyway thats my ultimate goal, having 30 mini networks for 30 different niches and rent out max 10-15 homepage links on each site.

If you add OBL that are not related to the content of the post / page then your rankings may suffer. The links should be related to the content in which they are placed.

It's not natural to be taking about web hosting and then link to 'dog walking service Toronto' lol

I alway stay away from high OBL websites. And always check the websites where my links are hosted often to see if they don't turned in to these high OBL websites you speak of.

Though, all of this is based on a hunch. Didn't tested it properly but then again it produces the right end results.

Honestly, in the past few months, tossing some outbound links to authority sites in your niche actually seems to help rankings. As long as it's a reasonable amount, I wouldn't worry too much about outbound links. I think too many SEOs get terrified of giving up 'link juice'
