EMD vs. Free Blog Site

Okay, so my former website did really well without an EMD because I used long-tail keyword URLS for my articles. Most of my traffic (and subsequent sales or click-thrus) came directly to articles via search engine. Two things happened: I got too broke to renew my site AND my MIL's farm got foreclosed upon, so our farm is no more and I just kind of let it go. Probably a mistake, but so it goes...

I'm reading here in this forum that since the last update, EMD doesn't matter as much to Google. So my question is, would a Wordpress.com site have as much value as a "real" domain? I understand there is a bit of a feeling that goes with "oh, this is just a blog" vs. "this is a REAL website", but is it enough of a difference to justify paying for domain registration and hosting? I think I'm going to give a free site a shot and see what results I can manage. What have been your experiences? Are there some sites that get better traffic for free blogs? I'm not a fan of the format of Hubpages, but Wordpress or Blogger I'm familiar with. Thanks in advance for your input!

I dont think you can monetize a wordpress.com blog.

While you can't monetize a free wordpress.com site, you can certainly monetize blogger, and you can do this in two different ways. You can either use Adsense, or links to Amazon if you're affiliated with them.

I'm not sure if a blogger site would have quite as much power as a regular site, but I've seen quite a few .blogspots rank pretty well without a whole lot of content or backlinks.

And I'm sorry you've had some tough circumstances.

Thanks, Nathan. I am just trying to come up with a masterful idea that will allow me to supplement or replace my income (hubby would still work for now!) The thing is, I don't get bored looking at keywords. I love analyzing traffic data. Makes me giddy. And I write very well - I'm good at researching and at writing quality SEO articles. So it makes sense for me to do this. I've just found that most of my interests lie in not-so-pricey ad land. So I don't make a lot. Plus, have they now removed the ability to check average click costs on GKWT? Is there somewhere to see that now? I want to go gangbusters on a new site, but I'm having a hard time getting traction.

    Ok.

You can still check average CPC, but you have to have an free Adwords account, and be logged in to it to see that though.
