Adsense vs. Ad Networks... Which is better?

When searching for potential alternatives to Adsense, I came across this thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...ernatives.html ... And to sum it up, just about everyone agrees that there's no REAL alternatives to Adsense (i.e none that will get you anywhere near "Adsense" income).

That got me thinking, some of these ad networks are HUGE and have TONS of inventory available to Media Buyers, such as DoubleClick, Adsonar, Pulse360, Adbrite, Valueclick, etc. etc. Where are these ad networks getting their inventory if every one of their publishers would be making more money with Adsense???

I know that the ad networks also cost a lot more than Google Display Network, as well as Direct Media Buys, and even though the Ad Networks take a commission, you would think there would still be enough money left over for the publisher. If there wasn't then why do Publishers even bother with these Ad Networks when they can just use Google Adsense?
If all these Ad Networks exist, and seem to make good money, then HOW is there no decent alternatives to Adsense??

    doubleclick is owned by google.

Alternatives do not have boatloads of inventory.

    That's the difference.

People who can, use adwords. Those that don't,
well, they will toss one penny towards your
    bottom line.

What do you want. A penny, or some dollars?

You were right the first time. There is no
    alternative to adsense.

Comparing others to google is a false comparison.

Google owns almost 50% of the global online advertising.
Facebook, about 3%. Comparing facebook to google would
    be silly, although many try.

That's absurd, there's TONS and TONS of available traffic via Media Buys. That's a major problem in the Internet Marketing community in general, people think PPV, SEO, PPC, are the only ways to go, but Media Buying is HUGE. People have made millions, yes, MILLIONS a month using Media Buys (display advertising) as their SOLE traffic source.

The fact that all these other Ad networks have tons of inventory is not in question.

I was trying to find out how Adsense pays out so much more than the other ad networks, and yet, the ad networks STILL have tons of inventory. I usually come at this from the Advertiser's perspective, and so I'm kind of new to coming at this from the Publisher's perspective, that's why I needed a bit of enlightenment on this topic.
