After drop of blog networks, how hard do you find it to get your rankings back?

Little case study:
Site1: dropped after ALN, HPRS, BMR deindexing, I rented 10 homepage links for a fairly easy keyword and 10 days later still ZERO movement, still at page 4.
Site2: never had any ALN, HPRS, BMR or other blog network links, was ranking at page 4 for a medium competitive keyword. I rented 10 homepage links and 6 days later it now ranks at #2 - Page ONE
So this makes me thing that this is not just a lose of rankings cause of the missing links but at the same time a penalty for x weeks/months.
Please share your results on this! Personally I have a lot of clients approaching me that dropped after using BMR and ALN massively and I'm having a hard time of moving them again with the same links that still work very well for other sites.
It's a huge problem when you offer a guaranteed ranking increase or refund and you get penalized domains to work with.
