Hello all you warriors. I hope that you are having a great day.

I really need some advise here. I am working on my website concept and have found something that I just can not believe and would like to make sure that I am doing everything that I need to or if I am missing something here with my keyword research.

I have been a flooring installer my entire life. (I am 44 now) So I have extensive knowledge in floor covering and think that this is a good niche to get into online.

My concern was that floor covering itself as my seed keyword would be to broad so I started to look at different keywords. I came across the keyword "flooring installer"

So when I did my research on that word here are the results from market samurai.

Flooring installer:

As you can see SEO Traffic says 167 The competition says 258,000 and the seo value is $1715.91. These are great numbers if you can get ranked in the first position in google which we all know is the challenge.

Any the next thing I did was to look at the seo competition tab and here is what I found.

SEO Competition

Now the only thing that I see here that would give me concern is some of the domain ages. I see no backlinks to speak of to the page that is (BLP) The index count (IC) look good especially in position 2,3, and 4 And there are really only 2 fully optimized pages on here.

This was very surprising to me and I think that this would be a main keyword phrase that I could rank for. Especially with a lot of content on the site.

My goal would be to make a site where flooring installers could list the jobs that they do and have there customers rate them on the work that they do.

Any way please let me know if I am missing something here or is this as good as I think it is.

I would really appreciate the input.

Thank you very much.

Before doing anything, you do realise that the exact monthly search volume for "flooring installer" is only 210.

    Are you aware of this?

This is something that I did not check out. I understand that means that is a good way to understand how your site would do immediately meaning if you rank for that word the first thing that happens is that you first get ranked for your keyword on exact matches then as time goes on you would get ranked for phrase match and later for broad match.

I understand that you want some exact match and then build more content for phrase and exact.

Am I understanding this right or is there something you can tell me to help me with my understanding.

In other words why does the exact match have an impact on what I am doing?

Because it is the exact combination your prospect types into the search engine in that exact order with nothing before or after it.

Exact match is everything. No other value matters. Welcome to keyword research.

There's not much point in ranking for this.

The entire first page will be covered with local listings. Local flooring installers will take precedence over anything you create, not to mention you will get people from all over the country asking you to install stuff.

    I'd try ranking locally instead.

Part of the plan I have is to let flooring installers create a page that they can list there local address, phone number, and pictures along with customer reviews so having the installers do this will create a place that I will get natural search ranking from there content and the installer will also get calls from those people to install there floor in that area.

Do you think that this is a good idea?

      Thank you for your help.

Im making reference to the Google keyword tool.

Exact match means, exactly that. The total number of monthly searches performed within Google for that EXACT PHRASE.

Forget about phrase or broad. You're wasting your time.

What you want to focus on, especially if you're performing keyword research is exact match only.

As for your screenshots, heres a few of my thoughts....

My only concern with this keyword would be the aged domains. However having said that, everything else is pretty weak, especially BLP and the onsite stuff (title, URL, desc and head)

You'll notice that Ive turned off ..index count (IC) referring domains (RDD) and referring domains to page (RDP) I do this because in my experience they've had little to no bearing in terms of measuring strength of competition. The fewer squares onscreen you have, the less noise you'll have to filter through. Try to focus JUST on whats important. Remove the rest.

Again, you'll notice that Ive turned off a lot of the unecessary crap here. I only want to see SEARCHES, SEOT, PBR, SEOC, SEOTC, and SEOTCR.

Whats really important here is SEOTCR. Thats what I call the keyword "saturation point". The lower the percentage, the weaker the TOTAL strength of competition is. Understand? You'll note in this case, its only 3%. Thats a good thing

So in summary, given the indicators in the matrix above, and the fact that the SEOTCR is only 3%, this would be a relatively easy keyword to rank for.

But, for a total of 210 exact searches per month, only you will know for certain as to whether or not investing your time towards it, is worthwhile.

This is very helpful. So I have another question then?

I can rank easily for this keyword with some relevant content. That relevant content could be several pages about different cities that are in my keyword list.

      Example:
      New york flooring installer
      flooring installer ny
      dallas flooring installer

And then sell those leads to people in that area or lease the site to them. would that be a good idea?

Businesses will only be likely to advertise given some form of return on their investment. And that return will most likely depend on the amount of traffic youre capturing, which again revisits the amount of search volume.

        Fun, isn't it?

Well now, as I understand it, at least from Market Samurai's own tutorials, as your site grows through content, back links and everything else that causes a site to move up through the search engines, your site will start ranking for broad and phrase.

If you look at the #9 site, you can see the domain name is woodflooringinstallers, this would be a phrase and it is still ranking pretty good for flooring installers...this is of course assuming that the keyword on this site is wood flooring installers, which it probably is.

I have seen numerous examples of sites that rank in the top ten for a phrase or broad match on their keywords. So broad is definitely a good indicator of future potential traffic.

Seems like you understand the industry much better than any of us but from what you have shows it seems like it is a profitable niche.

The fact of the matter is that you have to adopt one of two strategies for your keyword research and ranking:
    1) rank for a competitive search term
    2) rank for many low competition search terms

    hope this helps
