Re-categorizing indexed posts?

I'm wondering if anyone can offer any advice on this topic.

I'm looking to re-categorize some posts for SEO purposes and wondering if it's worth the trouble? I would have to relist all the pages on my twitter and facebook page and all currently indexed posts would then be a 404 redirect. The posts I'm looking to change aren't really ranking for anything (hence the change being warranted, to overhaul the SEO), nor do they have any current backlinks.

Any particular pro's con's to doing this?

I've done this a time or two...I had a site that was a complete autoblog and I wanted to make it a real site, so I (naively) deleted all the pages. Hundreds and hundreds of pages.

The next day I discovered that I was getting a ton of 404 hits.

After a little research, I found several WP plugins that I could install that intercepted all 404s and redirects them to whatever page I want. I even found one that would log all of the incoming links and give me the chance to take advantage of any that would be really popular.

Cons? Not many after I found the plugins.
Pros? I got to start my site over with it and I'm fairly happy now.
