Creating good content is easier than spamming

My friends and I are just getting into affiliate marketing, and it seems as though we are divided in our philosophies.

My friends are all about creating a ton of ****ty websites and backlinking the hell out of it by buying links to rank high on Google.

Whereas I think that is too much work. It is much easier and much more FUN creating GOOD content that you know your target audience is going to like and SHARE.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against backlinking the hell out of your websites, but I just don't get why they consider "creating good content" too much work, when link building in the first place is a lot of work too.

They are trying to compensate deep thinking with mindless tedious work.

My friends are turning into spammers. I am not above spamming, but I don't think that should be your main focus.

Of course you are correct about content, spamming may get you noticed somewhat, but it's never quality traffic.

Think about how many options you have with creating content. You can literally take what's going on around you and pop it onto a webpage.

Also, when you find great content on the web, go ahead and put it up on your webpage (obviously with your own spin & your own words). But you can certainly take a popular video, put it up on your website add your own opinions and thoughts to it, and wallah, you've got brand new relevant content.

Now put this on an authority blog like EN and you're golden. Great thread

While I agree with your post for the most part, you're living in a dream land if you think you're niche website on "toasters" is going to be shared by other webmasters.

If you're doing affiliate marketing for physical products, then you're blog IS NOT going to be the next Facebook. Matt Cutts is full of crap when he suggests that quality content will bring your site backlinks.

Your focus should be on quality content. But you need to create some backlinks in order to get the exposure that your content deserves.

You are right, I haven't thought about niches that do not conjure up any passion like weight loss or money would. So I guess if I were doing a website selling toasters, I would somehow have to create a review page w/ affiliate links, and then spam the **** out of it in that case

You need to find a middle ground. As co2 says, nobody is really going to share a site about toasters.

You need to create GOOD content that will keep the interest of the people searching for your keywords. And you need to add in a mix of quality backlinks to rank that content.

in the long run the good content sites will win hands down. Gone are they days of producing crappy content, Google can spot these and won't rank them at all. No matter how may backlinks.

Dang near impossible do define good content.
      Google can't do it either.

Spamming is way easier. If it worked every time.

Good content has as much chance as spamming
      if that's all you do.

With good content, you have a chance at
      linkbait.

Good content and a $1.50 will buy you a cup
      of coffee at Starbucks.

Just for laughs I did a search for
      creating good content

This thread now ranks #2 and it
      aint about good content.

      I rest my case.

So have my friends been right all along? Although good content will help, it is ultimately the spamming that will gain me the edge? Afterall, I just realized I will be selling some shady products like homemade eBooks and homemade software....

        How ironic!

Quality content is a subjective term, just as quality music is, or anything that is an art. However, I agree that "quality content" is usually a longer term plan, but you gotta get the backlinks too.

For me (my subjective opinion), quality content is tuning into the mindset of the person who is going to type in the keywords you are targeting into the search engines. This does not necasserily mean a 2000 word article on a topic/keyword and it doesn't necessarily means it is not either. Giving the searcher what they are looking for is really the art, especially if making money is your purpose.

The answer is "do both". It is not difficult creating (or purchasing) engaging content. Its also not difficult backlinking the heck out of your websites. Persuasive affiliate sites will make your alot more money than a bunch of crappy sites though. The ROI isn't even close.

Spammy backlinks are more short term until Google clamps down on them. Good quality content with quality links wins for me every time.

If you want to submit 100,000 article to article directories its almost impossible if you want to do it yourself and if you want to add 100,000 articles to your website, its also seems very difficult and maybe impossible. And even if you can do this, its doesn't guarantee that your site gets a good amount of traffic because its not clear that these articles rank high or low in search engines.

I invested 40K USD in a website with very high quality content and i don't have traffic, in other hands a friend of mine created a site in the same niche with spinned content and massive SEO and he's doing well for less than 500 USD invested.

Quality content is nothing without SEO.

Seeing this i tried massive SEO technics on my site and i got the message in GWT for fake links... 40K invested in the best content i could have for nothing, my site is simply the best in my niche and i'm not ranking, creating good content is not going to make you have traffic in any way. In my niche nobody is going to give me a free link even if my site is the best in the world.

I am gradually moving over to purely content-based strategies as I am sick of all the spamming (though I don't do the spammy stuff anyway - comment spam etc.) I think I have got some of the problems ironed out. People say they have quality content and are still not ranking, but I wonder, is their content REALLY that good? Good content at the end of the day is content people WANT to READ, and I think Google has a whole bunch of ways of telling this, not least from bounce rate.

I will report back if I come up with anything conclusive (or look out for the WSO :-D ).

You are going to have a rough time. Quality content is great. Definitely important. But good luck ranking well. I know Google wants us to all create great content and hope that it gets shared. But unfortunately it's not that easy.

In my thoroughly professional opinion Quality definitely trumps quantity!

I know people will disagree with me but there is some truly awful, unreadable, auto-generated content out there. Those websites may experience temporary periods of being near the top of search engines but there is no way they can hope to sustain that. I've even heard some people suggest that awful content is good for PPC because people will want to leave your site. That is so backwards I don't know where to begin.

Spamming bad content may work faster but it won't last. Creating high quality content that people will want to read is what creates lasting success. I still get activity on websites I've basically abandoned only because the quality of the content is so high.

If you want to know why good content matters since the last Google update I'd be happy to send you my 20 page report on the subject. Just send me a pm if you're interested.

The only way to rank is to have a lot of backlinks, creating good content it's not enough. I pay 30 USD per article, high quality content only, with images, extensive research on the subject, etc.

Writing really good articles is not enough to rank, firstly because the good articles don't use enough good keywords to rank with and secondly because the really good content is not what people want, they want a service that could be explained in a few words and they don't want to lose time reading thousands of words even if they are well written.

My mistake was to believe i could rank better than competitors with the best site in my niche when they are over spamming the web with links everyday and creating poor quality content with writters in Africa using all the keywords that make good traffic. They are optimizating every anchor on each of their page when i'm only creating good articles without keyword research or whatever.

To make money do not create good content, create content based on keywords with writters in Africa, Mexico, India, etc.

Google penguin is the algorithmic update of Goolge. This new algorithm is aimed to penalize and change the world of SEO strategies. If you violate the Google Webmaster’s Guidelines, spamming, duplicating contents, link schemes etc., your website will be ranked down, worst case is to be penalized by Google.

So its better to create great content for doing SEO rather than having thousands of bad links.
