Hi, i noticed a site recently coming up for google searches , when you look at the source code i can see all the place names and google is obviously also seeing this, but if you look at the page normally they are not visible.
Can anyone give me any idea how this is done ?
Is it considered bad practice ?

    If you mean hidden text, i should say that its an old useless technique that can be detected easily and fast by Google and its a kind of black hat technique and Google doesn't like it at all. So its not suggested at all that you use hidden text or make the color of contents of a page like background that visitors don't see it.

    Using hidden text is not favorable as it can increase the bounce rate (when visitors won't see the contents they are expecting due to the hidden nature) which may lead to lowering in organic traffic.

    Hey!

    It's not hidden text. Go the top-bar and take a look at that google maps icon, hover over it and you will find a cascading menu class="locationbutton". Here's the styling;

    <ul id="area-list" style="z-index: 1000; display: none;">

        Not really it's not hidden from the vistors sight, it's just styling. Actually it's quite a good idea, Google have always advised not to fill your footer with these types of "area" links and instead use better navigation or a seperate page + I'm seeing an increasing amount of people claiming panda is hitting them for keyword stuffing using these local search links crammed in their footer.

          Thanks I want to cover all cities , towns and villages in the uk as I offer nationwide cctv installation but its ridiculous for one guy to try and do a page for every village, so it seems like a never ending task that yell.com always win as they probably have a team of copyrighters.

            Hi mate

            Really if you want to build local area pages then go for it. If you are a serious company and have a good budget then content can cost you as little as $3 a piece if you order 750+, then it's just a case of optimizing it and uploading it yourself, getting some social bookmarking tools or outsourcing a small link bulding campaign for 2/3 months, you won't need really heavy links for this just building the trust of your index page a few social bookmarks articles and profiles to your internal pages.

            I wouldn't bother with all the villages, just the ones that are nearest to you as these are probably the most profitable jobs in terms of your costs so it's worth developing the lions share in your own back garden before you expand out.

    Lots of websites use CSS in this way to move text out of the users sight to have images or videos in view and the text content still crawlable.
