Hi guys,

I bought the WSO `google resurrection` the other week and so i must be on his email list coz i got a email about a update to the wso and in the update he talks about forum profile backlinks now have a negative effect on serps ? so hes saying that if you use forum profiles in your backlinking mix this will have a negative effect on your sites performance what do you guys think because i still use profile backlinks in my backlinking mix and yeah of course i know there no where near as effective as they where back in the day but.. A negative effect ????

I think Google is cracking down on the whole link relevance thing. If you have maybe a few profiles from forums in your niche and the profile is fully completed (like many warrior forum profiles) and not just 2-3 links then maybe the big G is more likely to see it as acceptable.

However the practice a year or so ago was to get hundreds of forum profile links either quickly or over time (usually using software) from all sorts of unrelated forums and when you think about it this is just spam.

I think it was a matter of time before Google caught on to profile links.

Lets face it - the only reason people are still hanging on to forum profiles is because they are so easy to get you can get hundreds at the click of a button - not because they are very effective. Any serp in which you rank with hundreds or thousands of forum profiles you would totally dominate with just a few high quality authority links. As to whether each link is a negative factor now I tend to doubt it (they just seem to be discounted unless you have nearly no competition to speak of) but there is no doubt that the general practice of using hundreds and thousands of them is now a negative factor -

They get people the dreaded unnatural linking notice.

So yes on some level its a fact. Will people dispute it? Yes. On this board they will hold on to it for months if not years because if forum profiles no longer are used, social book mark blasts are not used, article blasts are not used, spam blog comments are not used many people would not know what else to do.

Forum links tend to 'fall off' and get deindexed pretty quickly. As MikeAnders said, legit forum links from forums you participate in are probably treated differently.

Just mix up your links and make sure you vary your anchor text and then you do not have to worry about the effectiveness. Trust me when I say it is way better to have your links coming from many different sources. forum comments, social bookmarks, videos, etc.

You can still rank easy keywords off forum profiles alone which means they still have juice. Anybody who says otherwise is spreading misinformation. Every link has power. That power is determined by site/page power divided by site/page outbound links. Forum profiles seemingly lost power for 2 reasons:

1 - overused, meaning more outbound links diluting link power
2 - Googles changes in the last year of two of not weighting link juice on the same sliding scale. High powered (high pr) links are worth more then the sum of their parts. Hence, low quality links are worth less. But mind you still worth something.

I have over 3K links on a single niche forum & the pages they link to are still ranked & most with Google Sitelinks. Now that one forum is 100% related to my own sites, so it's possible that's the only thing useful as far as SEO goes.

The purpose for those forum links is to deliver direct traffic.
