I've just started using wordpress to build some niche blog sites. Do I need to manually add H1, H2 & H3 tags to my content? It doesn't appear wordpress is doing this for me.

thanks for your feeback.

Your theme will have defaults set up already. Check your source code.
Usually the site title will be h1 tagged and the title posts will be h2 tagged on most themes.
You can manually change these in your CSS and page.php and single-post.php settings.

It's easy during editing a page to give some text a H1, H2 or H3 code by clicking Paragraph at the left top of the WYSIWYG editor and change it to what you want. When there doesn't appear something like that, it could be that there is nothing configured for in your theme's CSS file. If so, let me know than I will help to to add it.

you theme should automatically use H1 tags for the title

using a H2 is debatable bcause sometimes it just makes the site look messy and spammy if you include a H2 tag containing your keyword again that your trying to optimize

i sometimes dont even use h3 tags

it all depends if it fits and looks natural

i always check my on site SEO using serp iq and most of the time my on site SEO is in the high 90%

this is good enough for me

your h1, h2 and h3 tags should be used if they fit and look natural but if you try and force them then it will do more damage than good and could effect things like your bounce rate and then it will potentially harm your rankings anyway

so keeping things optimized the best you can while keeping things looking tidy and natural is the best approach

What you can do is select the line of text within your content in the Wordpress WYSIWYG editor that you want to make H1/H2/H3 and press ctrl+1/2/3 respectively to make them header tags. Of course, if you're on a mac, replace ctrl with command.

Not required but it will definitely help with your on-page SEO. Post titles are usually designated as h1. Then make several other headers for h2 and h3, and I usually like to make an image h3 with my keyword phrase as the alt text.
