Keyword Research (really quick question!)

Ok so I'm confused, I was doing kw research and I found some low comp kws that have pretty high traffic. The thing is I searched the kw on google using the exact search to find out how many competing sites there are. I always thought that the exact search kw and the broad search kw are the same. So I made a squeeze page targeting that kw. My squeeze page is #1 when I search with exact search using paranthesis. But it is on the 4th page of google without the quotes!

Im pretty sure most people search google without the quotes because so far I've only gotten 5 views. ONly 5! (for a term that has 10,000 monthly searches) Broad search has 59,000,000 sites while with quotes there are only 50.

So why doesn't the google kw research tool make a distinction between kw's with paranthesis, and without? So you can know the real amount of searches for exact.

Google's keyword tool will show you the exact searches per month, and this means (you already know this) the number of searches where people typed in that exact keyword phrase into the Google search box.

It has nothing to do with whether or not your keyword is search with ""...that indeed won't happen much.

So you will get the right data about how many people typed in the exact phrase.

I honestly never worry too much about how many competing pages there are..it is much more important to check what is going on on the first page of Google...what are these guys doing. A tool like Market Samurai or Keyword Blaze can help there.

The fact that you are on the 4 page means to me that you still have some work to do in terms of building backlinks to get your page noticed by Google as being relevant enough to be on page 1.

      Hope it helps (somewhat)

Look at the table in this post to get a better idea about broad match vs exact match vs phrase match:

Broad Match vs Phrase Match vs Exact Match

The keyword tool will tell you how many people search for that exact phrase per month, but you're right, you have to actually rank for the term without quotes/brackets

  • That doesn't make sense. Because different sites pop up with the paranthesis. But the keyword tool doesn't show different amounts of searches. IT shows the people who type in the broad match (in that exact order its typed) but it doesn't show the people who search using exact match

Again I did a search using google kw tool. I put one kw in the search box twice. One with paranthesis and the other without. When I clicked searched, the one with the paranthesis wasn't in my search term box.

It will only do the search for the one without paranthesis, indicating that the two kw's are the same. But how can the be the same kw if you get different websites when you search them in google? And a different amount of people are using the two versions of the kw?

Hold on....you were trying to put the keyword into the keyword tool like this: "keyword" ?

No that doesn't work. On the left of the page of the GKT you will see the boxes you can tick to get broad, exact and phrase match results. SO if you need to know the exact match results, tick the box "exact"...

you have understood it wrong i guess.
simple example in understanding the difference between "broad, exact and phrase " is like this
say for instance your keyword is : seo company

when people search in google something like this "best company for seo" this is called broad search , because it has the two keywords that you have targeted thats "seo" and "company" but they are not in the same order it just comes in random. This is called broad search

    Now Phrase match
someone searches in google : which is the best seo company
see here the keyword"seo company" comes together . The number of searches like this is recommended as Phrase

    Now exact
Someone searches in google : seo company
This type of searches is called exact matches.

    Hope you got the idea.

People have misunderstood that normal people are searching google with "cccc" and [ccc] i dont think this happens

Correct me if i am wrong

      Hi hocuspocus32,

Please allow me to correct you, since you are indeed wrong.

There is no such thing as a "broad search", or an "exact search". There is only regular search, phrase search, and advanced search methods using search Operators. And no of those search methods have anything at all to do with "match types".

"Match types" simply refer to the various methods of trigger ad impressions in the sponsored listings on search result pages.

    Hi MorbitlyObesePaypalAccoun,

Sorry to inform you, but you are all mixed up. I seems that you have the wrong ideas about the meaning of the terms you are using.

First, let me try to clarify things a bit for you. There is no such thing as an "exact search" on Google. There is a regular search, and there is "phrase search", however those search methods have nothing to do with "match types".

"Match types" refer to methods of triggering ads in the sponsored listings section of search result pages, nothing to do with differing methods of searches.

Second, you won't find any data in the Google AdWords Keyword Tool other than data for regular searches. There is only one set of data in the keyword tool that shows the number of searches for a particular keyword, it is the exact match data. The other match types, "broad" and "phrase", include data for an undisclosed number of keywords, and is not data for any one particular keyword.

I hope that clarifies things a bit for you.
