Both have same content. My main domain is xyz.com. So, where to add canonical tag? In main domain or sub domain???

Not sure you'd use it on either. Why do you have two domains with the same content?

Which one would you rather see indexed at Google...the canonical tag should point to that one. That's basically what the tag is, it tells the search engines which page you want indexed when there are multiple pages with the same content.

Add the canonical link element in your sub folder/domain. If you put it on the main page your are telling Google not to crawl it and you do not want that.
