Is Pinging Still Okay?

All of the threads on here about the sudden dangers of backlinking have me wondering about pinging an updated site or webpage to pingler, pingomatic, etc.

Is this still a safe thing to do or not?

    Hi Catherine,

If you are not abusing pings (IE, pinging the same URL to the same service more than once) then it is fine. Basically you are just making spiders aware that there is new "food" for them.

Catherine make sure you keep it 100% random.. over doing it or leaving patters is what will get you tripped up. Keep it random and you'll be good.

Actually, I'm not exactly sure what "100% random" means.

All I've ever done is ping to pingler and a couple other places when I update a site or page. I may do the same url to 2 or 3 ping sites in one day...that's the most I ever do. And I'm not likely to do the same url again for a week or so. Some days I don't do any pinging.

Maybe I don't do enough pinging...but after a hit on my best site's ranking thanks to (I assume) a very small amount of BMR links, I'm pretty nervous about doing anything other than adding content.

It sounds like you've got the "random" part down... basically if you ping with any consistency or patterns it leaves a footprint. You don't seem to be overdoing it so don't worry..

Pinging your site or post is necessary for the spiders to find it. Just don't abuse it, but definately ping every post to at least 2 or 3 ping sites.

I prefer to set up a few bookmarks and let the spiders find it naturally.. I sort of have your concerns, too, like maybe pinging is too 'forced'.. but I really dont think it will hurt, just might not do as good as bookmarking.

yes pings are still pretty good to get the bots coming - but dont overdue it will result in bad endings. Try to use twitterfeed and tweet your urls you want to being indexed

Pinging is fine as long as you're not doing it everyday. Good luck.
