Can somebody explain to me what the difference between exact and broad searches are on Google Keyword Tool?

For the same keyword, I get 1500 searches for broad, and 22 for exact. What is the difference?

Exact is the number of searches that exact keyword is getting. 22 people typed in that exact keyword in the last month.

Broad is a general sense of the keyword... it could be a bunch of different keywords relating to that keyword hence there's so many more searches.

Eg: An exact Search might be "How to make money with facebook" and broad will count "Making money with facebook" "How can I make money with facebook" into it's results

Always use "exact" when searching... it will save you a lot of time and money.

It can be explained more simply and clearly than that. Example keyword "Rent a room in London"

Exact: The number of monthly searches which use exactly "Rent a room in London"

Phrase: The number of MS which use the exact keword as part of a phrase and in the same order "Where can i rent a room in london" or "My friend has a room for rent in london"

Broad: The keyword in any order "When i lived in london i used to live with my girlfriend in a room and never paid any rent"

    Hope that helps.

Also if you are trying to rank for certain keywords in search engines avoid the usual trap of looking at the competition gauge in google keywords tool. That is related to bidding competition on advertising space. Not search engine ranking for websites.

      Hi dalc,

There is no "difference between exact and broad searches", because no such thing as an "exact and broad search".

I assume that you are referring to "match types" in Google's keyword tool. "Match types" simply refer the optional keyword types that you use in the AdWords advertising program. The different match types are used to trigger ads for different groups of keywords.

When you use exact match keywords in your AdWords ad campaigns they trigger ads only when that exact keyword term is searched, and only if you have out bid your competitors for the limited number ad spots.

Phrase match keywords will trigger ads for many different search term phrases, but only when the keyword is contained somewhere within the searched phrase.

Broad match keywords will trigger ad impressions for many different search terms that are similar or somewhat related to the keyword.

Brad means how many users are used the combination of keywords in search box for finding the result.

There are many great explanations up top so I won't go into detail but from building lots of sites, go with the exact number. That will give you the best search volume for your website.

Yup, exact means exact. Nothing more than that.

Broad means they can add in any other word into your phrase of keywords.

So as long as it is related to your keyword it will put in the result too.
