ALN - what happend and is there any point in using it.

I was just getting started properly in IM (under a year and I was about to quit my day job) and thought I'd finally found something that worked really well. (Since I only go after keywords with tiny competition). Now I've found out that G has deindexed/devalued some/all of their sites.
I am really gutted about this but I am still confused about the issue - some people have told me that you will be ok if you use other backlinking methods ie you have a diverse spread of links - not the majority of your links being from ALN/other similar blog networks.
But I am worried that this might not the case... My question is does ALN still have the awesome ranking power IF we make sure to do other things besides using it?
