I'm not basing this off of anything but what some of the 'black hat' guys are saying in their forums, who seem to knw their stuff, but might also just be misguided BS. But, this concerns me, as an SEO noob, because I have also read countless reports on how designing Web 2.0 sites as buffer sites around your main site is a very effective strategy. Can anyone shed some light? Does it still pay to build Web 2.0s as buffers?

Web 2.0 properties are effective since before. And now, about making them as buffer pages, you can see some backinking strategies that include tier links using them. So, yes web 2.0 properties are still effective as buffer pages.

Heck yeah 2.0 are great! Key thing is to build quality backlinks to them. Lots of people just build a bunch of free web2.0 accounts, put their link on it and forget about it. That's not very effective. What is effective is putting good (quality) content on them and build backlinks to them. That link juice will trickle on down to your money site safely!

Thanks for the re-affirming, guys I figured they were still going strong. Perhaps I should not attach so much weight to what a few black hatters are saying.

Hmm, many seem to be privy to blasting their Web 2.0s with blog comment links in an effort to charge them up a bit. Is this a bad strategy? There are only so many layers of quality links you can make! lol

That is because many of the Black hatters are doing it wrong. They will use senuke x to create several 100 web2.0 with spun content and never touch them again.

You want to build these web2.0 with unique content and also add some videos or pics to make it legitimate looking. Then build comments, profiles and bookmarks to those.

I am not sure what you mean by there are only so many layers of quality links.

You can do the same thing with a set of article directores as well or a forum link doesnt matter. Just pump your main link be it a web2.0, article on a article directory or a anything else. and you will be good.

No Web 2.0 site's are not dead. It is more a case of how you use them. They are still good tools to help build good quality backlinks, but in order to get good quality backlinks, the work has to be good quality otherwise you are wasting your time. Well written and unique articles will help to build good backlinks. I wrote a hub 2 years ago and it still receives 60+ views a day.

Well in My Opinion, Web 2.0 Sites are Still pretty Much Effective to Build Qualitative Back Links! The one of the most important aspect is Qualitative Content! As much as qualitative content you write for your Blog, as many you have chance To get Unique and Targeted Inbound Links!!

The standard ****ty web2.0 pushed out with software like senukex or other tools that 100.000's of IM'ers spam seem to lost a lot of it's power indeed.

Like others said: It's better to do them by hand, customize them, place a long article, put some images and/or youtube video's so that they look real. I think Google recognizes that as some recent case study from a friend showed that he ranked very well, while all the cheap senukex campaigns hardly do anything.

I recently outsourced 1000 web2.0's to a senukex guy and the results were very dissapointing.

Web 2.0 properties still works as long as you do it properly. Some SEO guys use them to spam using spinned or low quality contents that's why their saying it's not working anymore. Many SEO guys still use Web 2.0 properties for backlinks and it's works fine.

OP here. Thanks so much for the info guys (and girls).

I just had a few more quick questions as you've all been very helpful.

    (1) Is it important to contribute regularly to your Web 2.0s in order to keep them fresh? Or do you simply throw up an article, a video and some customizations and leave it alone..?

    (2) Can programs such as Scrapebox be effectively used to 'power up' your Web 2.0s or can this harm them?

Don't blast them too much. Having a web 2.0 with 2 views and 1000's of links is not natural. Google might start implementing different strategies to detect this type of situation even if the web 2.0's are manually created. They can also detect the date when articles are posted, so you should spread submissions just in case.
