To get rank for high competition keywords, your need site need to constantly get search impression and CTR. Once accumulate great traffic, then you only stand a chance to get rank for high competition keywords.

Begin with target niche keywords (more easy to rank), then slowly move to generic keywords.

Quality theme based work is the first strategy to rank up a keyword whether it high or low competition. After that just check out website competitor back link with that particular keyword and follow it back links.

The short answer is LINKS. Specifically, BLOG LINKS. STILL. YES, two months after multiple blog networks got whacked, they work just as good as ever. We've been using blog post links for years, and currently have a client page one for insurance lead, for hotel, for TONS of other difficult keywords. Both of those were done in less than a 4 month period.

Also, CONTENT DOES NOT MATTER for lower to medium, and even medium high competition keywords. We have some completely off topic sites ranked for keywords with 13 to 15 million competing. There is not one word of it on the page that's ranked. Again, these examples are recent, and done and still exist through Panda/OverOptimization/Penguin tantrum, and still are going strong....

Quite simply, link. We can provide them for you of course, but just build some sites, create unique content, embed you link in it, and publish it...

There are really many techniques that you can use. But for me, these techniques always were the best:
- social bookmarking;
- social networking;
- linkbait;
- competitor analysis;
- search engine submission;
- exploring multimedia.
- quality content.
There are many others techniques you can use, but it all depends on the niche and other factors which have influence!
