I'm just wondering how difficult it is to rank for local keyword terms... what has been your backlinking like when trying to get someone on the first page for local terms?

it depends on the market and the location for example if you doing seo for plumbing company in LA it might be little harder than less competitive industry however overall its easy, as far as today I got 100% success rate for SEO.

Try to focus on google maps, it's fairly easy to rank high

Generally, pretty easy but really depends on your competition. Is it easy or hard to outrank them? Right now I've got an EMD in carpet cleaning city showing up recently on the bottom of page 1. Site has no backlinks, zero, I had forgotten all about this site and have only done proper on page seo and no offpage. Was pleasantly surprised to see it showing up all of a sudden. That's due to the weak competition...some of them don't even have the right keywords on page.

Impressive. How do you determine whether the competition is too difficult or not? Do you go by PR / total backlinks of the competition?

Backlinks, assuming they are ranking in top positions already, then their on page is already well optimized. Few years back my one page website pr0 was outranking 2 sites with pr2. That was because I had more backlinks than they did. I use to get a kick out of showing people how my crappy one page site is able to get top ranking, but my competition are tougher now.

Yes by saying google maps I mean google places its pretty much the same thing.
I normally link to the place page from the contact page on my client site and of course I embed a map as well.
It's important to optimize the place page, use every single option, add images, video, categories.... etc
btw I found that my clients like to have this 5 gold stars for that you need minimum on 5 reviews, i'm sure you can be creative there and find a way how to make those reviews to be positive

There is only a slight difference when you are trying to rank websites for local search terms. You can just simply target local keywords or local terms. For example, if you are targeting a keyword "real estate" and you are in the Philippines, you can make it as "Philippine Real Estate" or "Real Estate Philippines".

About building links to it, you can just do what you usually does in keyword targeting. If you are going to target money keywords, better to start with an article or press release together with some web 2.0 properties for promotion and buffer pages.

Buffer pages will serve to you as filter in blasting thousands of links at a time specially if you are using some backlink services. Big sites like squidoo and hub can manage thousands of links, that's why you don't have to worry about getting penalized or something relative to it at first.

This is a great step for targeting local keywords because the competition is not that stiff compare to global terms. Though it still depends, the reality is still there that targeting local keywords is quite easy compare to global ones.

Actually, when it comes to keyword ranking, nothing is impossible if you're the ding the right medium for it. The best example for that is my keyword "Educational Travel." I've been working on it for about two and half weeks. I've started from scratch and now I'm having a good progress, that is because I'm doing the right moves to build it up.

It totally depends upon market and geographical location. I have employed both onsite optimization and offsite optimization strategies, you can also use google places for your local business.
