Can social bookmarking be overdone?

I recently hired someone to submit my website to 600 social bookmarking directories on Fiverr. Now I've noticed that many of the link wheels and link pyramids on Fiverr also involve social bookmarking... and I'm hesitant to order them because I don't want to overdo the social bookmarks.

Can social bookmarking be overdone? More specifically, can I be penalized for accidentally submitting my link twice to the same bookmarking website?

    If it is done by a different person then it would look very much natural, also I have noticed that lot of these services on fiverr do create a new account for you each time. But I have also noticed that most of these bookmarking sites out of 600 are very low quality and full of crap links.
    If you do bookmark under your own account and only submit links from the same domain then some bookmarking sites might ban you.

    I have people get 1500+ social bookmarks from me at a time and it seems to work just fine for them!

    Direct Social Bookmarking can definitely be overdone. Its a great way to lose trust in the search engines, especially from a new site. Indirect social bookmarking is not as big of a concern.

    It's one of the link types you can hammer without a problem. Or if there is, I've never seen one.

    You'll probably find that many sites aren't worth much but every little helps.

    Just vary the anchor text when you are sending the bookmarks to your site and you should be fine!

    Don't rush after the numbers. About top 8-10 bookmarking sites can give you most of traffic compared to the hundreds of other low quality sites. In your case overdone may not be that harmful if you keep couple of months gap between repeating the process and that's too for 1-2 more times.
